my baby boy is now 19 days old and still suffer from jandice.... i am also exclusively breastfeeding him with little formula top up.... normally he will actively feed for 15 minutes, then will quit.... and he has gain around 180g in 4 days from the last check up... his diaper is not very wet but always have yellowish poo poo...
he has received phototherapy for 3 nights already (two nights within first week, one night in the second week)
should i continue to breastfeed him.... does my case fall in breastmilk jandice or something more serious....
anyone got similar experience? how long does it take for your baby to lower the jandice level?
my gal was similar to your boy in the first month, she was admitted to hospital for a couple of days and had phototherapy for one whole day...her problem was she did not drink much and liked to sleep...I had to take her to maternal clinic and hospital during the first three weeks...she did not take formula but I had to replenish her the shortfall by expressed breast milk by softcup feeder...she had to go back to hospital on day 21 to take blood to check on liver function..I only had a feeling of relief when the result was all right...her jaundice lasted until she was well more than a month old... so don't worry...see if you can pump some out to replenish the shortfall if he does not have enough vee vee and he does not latch on long enough...I think if you keep monitoring on the jaundice and so long as it does not go up, it will be fine
thank you for sharing your experience, i hope i will have the same stamina as you do... i will try my very best to keep going...
last night, i fed my baby for 45 min (though he latch on for more than an hour) at 2:00am and he still cried for more yet refused to latch on... so i gave him formula to top up, he finished 3 oz in less than 5 minutes and fell asleep for 3 hours... in the 24 hours prior to this, he was entirely breastfed and was contended...
in between those 3 hours of sound sleep, he cried a bit but again refuse to latch on... this morning, he sucks for 20 minutes and then fell asleep again... looking at him, i am always very confused, should i continue or not...
last time (a week ago)when the nurse drew blood from his heel, it tooks over 5 minutes to stop the bleeding and blood was everywhere on his receiving blanket... i burst out crying and my heart ached so much...
Just believe in yourself and you will be able to do it!!! I always think that success in breastfeeding is more a result of will power and determination. People had told me that the flow of breastmilk will drop a great deal and eventually you won't be able to keep on feeding if you just pump milk out without latching on... but my elder son is an "extreme premature" baby who only learnt to suck, with much difficulty, some four months after he was born. So, he was on Expressed breastmilk (EBM) most of the time... and I could still feed him with whole breastmilk for 9 months plus another 7 months which was topped up with formula.
As I told you, my young gal was reluctant to suck the first month she was born and her weight had dropped as much as 10% the first week she was born. She was also very peculiar in that she only sucked from my one side and would cry like hell when I tried to switch her to another side... but I wanted to continue feeding her with breastmilk, so I pumped out milk and replenish her after her sucking (she only sucked for 20 minutes at most!) That was very tiring as I had C-section then and had to let her latch on, pumped out milk afterwards and then replenish her the shortfall with softcup feeder (to avoid nipple confusion!). Nevertheless, she was able to gain back all the lost weight and caught up on the growth curve when she reached one month old.
As I am a working mum and has another son to take care, so my gal has eventually changed to full EBM... but she is still on full breastmilk now...I may not be a very good example of breastfeeding as my gal is not fully latched on, but I just want to tell you if you keep it up, you will be able to do it also.
baby is now 25 days old and the count is still 15.0, increased in the last 3 days from 12.0 as I have been exclusively breastfeeding him in the last 3 days ...
he had a blood test when he was 20 days old and his liver function is okay... will try to get a copy of the lab test from the hospital in the next visit
he now weighs 4.00 kg (3.43 kg at birth) ...
my friends told me that I can:
- put him under the sun (doing it already)
- feed him some water (not sure if I should do this)
- feed him some 黃蓮 (my husband does not agree)
