He did not go to school (pre-school) yet??
as all day care and pre-school mostly celerbate it as well and that gave our child a sense of what Halloween is..
On Halloween day, you can accompany some playdate of your son, all go together for the Trick or Treat.. that is the way for him to learn more as well.
This year, my daughter, my son and all their play pals from BK families.. we had a T or T candies hunting at shopping mall and at the neighborhood.. that was cool..
little boys and girls learnt to say "Trick or Treat" and once they received candies, they said "thankyou and Happy Halloween".
Only pick 1 candy each time --is the key as well.. do not take too much..
after Trick or Treat outside, we took all their candies, put them in a big basket, and let all other children to come and pick them..
The way we do, just want them to have fun.. We don't allow them to eat too much candies..
My little son whom is almost 3, he knows, and he loves pencils, color book, stickers more than candies.. he will keep saying it's a party.. I am very happy, mami..
hum... my little son is a 一隻細膽豬 too.. therefore, this year, our 4 BK families get together.. to let our little one to learn.. age from 2.5 years old to 6 years old.. 7 of them had lots of fun!
Next year, you may try that (have play pal to go together)... anyway, by the time comes again.. he is 4 years old.. he will have lots of fun!

oic... I found those that for "infant and up nursery".
They take infants from 1 months old.. to Grade 5.
So, gabriel was there since he was 21 months old.
and this is his 2nd Halloween from day care.. therefore, he learnt.
It is ok.. 三月媽咪...
Thanksgiving, X'mas are coming, you can show him pictures, and bring him to the mall.. let him experience it and have some sense.. let him watch some DVD about X'mas, songs from X'mas..
Do you let him join any play group like little gym, gymboree?? Amanda and Gabriel attended those when they were little.

Nilli_Mammie, do you think those play groups are useful? we brought our son to gymboree play group one time for trial when he was 14 months... all they did is playing ball and walked around the room or crossed the 'bridge' and at the end sang songs together.... maybe the kids were too small there was no interaction with other children at all... i really can't tell if it was helpful esp. it is kind of expensive to me... what do you think?

I live in Brooklyn, NY.

And my girl went to day center since she was 6 months old.

She goes to school every afternoon, so that I can teach piano at home or do some housework.
Her teacher is very nice and professional.

BTW, the day care center held a Halloween party, that's why my honey dressed up like that.

She learns a lot form the day care center. She communicates with others. Of course, she is not talking BUT she does COMMUNICATE with others.

During the music lesson, she would produce sound and pretend she is singing!!

And she loves the toys in the center too.

The only problem is no other Chinese except her. So, we really afraid she likes to speak English more than Cantonese.

Amanda and Gabriel attened Gymboree since they were 10 months old.. Amanda took it until 19 months.. Gabriel took 1 semesters (10 weeks).
It is a social playdate that you let your infant to interact with others.. Amanda is a social butterfly.. she is also a teacher pet.. she will have to clean up.. help new kids to settle down..
Gymboree is the first step for her to make friends outside.. and I believe that I made the right decision.. if you met Amanda.. she is very kind to others.. she loves friends.
Gabriel.. is an opposite.. I feel so gulity that I couldn't do more for him due to my job.. but early play group helps my child to learn to share and communicate.
I made friends with other parents, discuss the way we teach our child, share experience to find peds and what baby food we started with..
We have our child play with each other...
To go to playgroup, is to help our infant to know that there are kids next to ours.. and help them to learn from sharing.
I sent them to playgroup because I was a childcare worker --before I studied nursing in hk.. so admir the education system of Montessori...
learning thru playing.. learning from experience..

NYmom,
doesn't matter, as long as you speak Cantonese to your lil one at home, she will pick it up and the prefect period for children to pick up language is before 6 years old.
Amanda was in Russian day care until 5, speaks Chinese, English, Spanish and Russian. She is in Gifted school 1st grade in Manhattan now.. still keeps her Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin ~~equal), English and Spanish..

Gabriel is in the same Russian day care now.. 100% understand English and speak Cantonese to us.(but poor in mandarin)..
teachers love my kids.. as they are the only one!!
I would say.. my kids got more attention than other.
As long as you speak Chinese to her, she will learn.

Hi Nillie_Mami,

According to my memory, you live in Staten Island, am I right?
If yes, how can you apply Amanda to a school in Manhattan? Is it a public school or private school?

And the owner of the day care of Bernadetteis also a Russian. She may learn more than what I expect!!

Hi Nillie_Mami,

I also remember Amanda learn piano follow the Suzuki method. How is she?

Will she take Royal examination?

Since I use the British teaching style, most of my students take Royal examination.

For Suzuki method, do they have any assessment?

My son goes to preschool this year and he really enjoys Halloween. His school has pumpkin patch trip, potluck party and trick or treat around the neighborhood (teachers and patients took the kids to walk around the neighborhood, volunteer patients gave out goodies). I'm glad that the goodies school prepared are healthy snacks, pencils and little toys. I and my hubby took day off to take my son and my daughter to pumpkin patch (a lot of parents and siblings attended the event) and they liked the hay ride and enjoyed seeing so many pumpkins.

On Saturday, we brought the 2 little ones to trick or treat in our neighborhood and our friend's neighorhood. They had so much fun. Instead of saying trick or treat, they sometimes say candy. We taught them to say thank you afterwards. My son always walked into people's houses and looked around, telling people that they should turn off the light to save energy, asking why there's only one pumpkin, etc. He's such a social bee. He says hi to people on the bus and talks to the driver every morning when I take him to school.

My daughter sang happy birthday to a lady when she went trick or treat. She's very talkative and has her own character for her age.

I talk to them in Cantonese and my mom teaches them to say Mandarin song but I don't know if I can keep them learning Chinese. My son likes to talk to his sister in English these days as he speaks in English with his classmates although quite a bit of them are Asians.

Nillie, NYMom,
When would be the appropriate age for kids to start learning piano? My 2 little ones like music and they play with their electronic piano everyday. Once I took them to Costco and I let them played with the piano, my son really flied his fingers on the keyboard like he really knows how.

They are 3.5 and 26 months old. Should I start when they are 4 or 5? Thanks.

Hi rose-mag,

In general, a child can start piano when they can speak "ABCDEFG", know "1, 2, 3 4" and can follow instruction.

In HK, since the kids start to go to school at 2 or 3 years old, they are more mature to obey instructions. Therefore. kids start piano when they are 3 years old.

In US, I will say "depends". Therefore, I usually give a free trial lesson to kids when their parents ask that question.

NYmom,
Amanda's OLSAT is 99%, so we can't find a school in Staten Island that accept her. Zone school doesn't provide gifted program and they said that they can't provide much help. Then we went to St. Joseph Hill Academy, they said that they can not provide "jump class" even while she was 4 and can complete schoolwork for 5years old last semester.
DOE said.. Manhattan the gifted school is the only option.. so We sent her to Manhattan.. and we are so glad that she is in.. She is happy everyday although she is not under controlled sometime.
Teachers there all had the special education certificate. they use Singapore Maths method. Big school from K-12..
After school program.. she can choose learning all different area.. from dancing to singing, art to Spanish, swimming to cooking, chess to hockey...
I believe that we found the right place for her and we are so glad that it belongs to government and we don't need to pay.

Yes, she learns piano follow suzuki method.
Now she is doing the pre-grade and 1st grade at the same time.
Her teacher wants to send her for exam, she said that it will be this coming spring..

Amanda is taking the piano class (after school program) on friday. piano class (private) on Saturday and also the theory class on Saturday.

She doesn't practice.. that is the problem because she is exhausted after each day of school. So, the only time she touchs piano.. is on Friday, and weekend.

teacher keeps complaining she has photo memory, that makes her very difficult to correct mistake!
Glad that at Youtube, people upload the pieces.. so I can show her and find out the mistake she made together.

I wait until Amanda was 4.5 years old, because I don't want to waste money, if she doesn't really like it.. it is a lot of money!
We first got the keybroad for her to practice. but after 3 months, principle from piano school took Amanda back and she teaches Amanda on her own.. because she knows that Amanda is a special child. Then, she told us that for the long run, we need to get her the piano instead of keybroad. So.. we went to craiglist.. to find the piano for her.
Gabriel is under Amanda's influence.. He will touch the piano, but he is not really "into" it.. he likes guitar more than anything.. therefore, we may let him to have a trial.. test drive.. and see when he turns 3.5 to 4 years old... Boys... tended to learn slower..
