On Saturday, we had to admit Katrina to the hospital. She has a lymph node infection on her right neck.
This nightmare started 2 weeks ago. On the morning of October 23, my maid found a hard lump on her right neck, below the ear. We had to immediately take her to the doctor. At first we didn't know what it was. But after doing ultrasound and blood test, we know that the lump is due to bacterial infection.
We started her on oral antibiotics but it did not help. Last Wednesday, we changed to another oral antibiotics and also have to go back to the hospital everyday to give her an injection. Still no improvement! Finally, we had to confine her to the hospital on Saturday and start her on intravenous antibiotics (the kind that you attach to your hand). The lump is really big. When we first found it, it was slightly bigger than a quail egg, and hard. Now it is almost the size of a small chicken egg, and soft. It is soft because there is pus developing inside it. I just pray that she can absorb it by herself. If not then we need to drain it surgically. Now all we can do is wait.
These 2 weeks had really been terrible. At first, we did not know whether it was infection or not. We were worried that it was something more serious, like a tumor. But thank God that it is not. Now that we know it is bacterial infection, we know how we can treat it.
However as a mother, I am in so much pain! I just cannot bear to see my little one go through so much physical suffering. The lump itself is painful. And everytime she takes oral medicine, she will cry, sometimes until she vomits. Doing the ultrasound is so uncomfortable. And she has been poked by needles so many times in the last few days: for blood test, for injection and for inserting the intravenous line. Her veins are so tiny that the nurses can't find it and had to poke her several times without success. Finally we had to get the doctor to fix it, but one day later, it was loose and she had to be poked again!
I also feel so so tired, both physically and mentally. Katrina is eating 100% breast milk, she eats 5 times a day. The first meal is direct breast feed, other meals are from pumped milk. Now I have to wake up at 6am and go to the hospital and feed her, and then go to work, and pump and then go back to the hospital after work to see her, and prepare the milk.... it is such as logistical nightmare! But I think that it is even more important now than ever that I need to continue with the breast milk, to build up her immunity and my lactation consultant told me that breast milk will help to regulate her blood cells too.
I just keep asking myself, where and how did she contract the bacteria that make her go through this? Is it me, is it her dad, or the maid, or the environment? I asked the doctor and he said that we can't really prevent this, just only keep places clean, like normal. I just feel so helpless, and I just don't understand!
I know this is a really long post, and thank you so much for reading it. I guess I am just so depressed that I would like to get some support from other mammies. And I just hope that this will end very soon and baby be healthy again!
I feel very sorry about what happened on your little one. Is she getting better these few days? When can she discharge from the hospital? Wish she will get well soon and you can take some rest as well.
I understand how you feel. My baby is a preemie who stayed at hospital for 18 days and experienced all what you mentioned. I cried many times and I didn't want hime to suffer any more. Are you a Christian? If so, just pray that God would comfort you and heal your baby.
Be strong! Your little one needs a strong mother to take care of him.

Katrina is still in the hospital, but everything is stabilized now! As the lump matures and ripens, there was a lot of pus developing inside. We consulted a Pediatric Surgeon. He knows that we really don't want to put Katrina through surgery. So he suggested that we try to use the needle aspiration method to drain out the pus. After the draining, if the pus does not continue to develop, we should be able to avoid the surgery. We did this for 2 times and it seems to be quite positive right now.
We still need to keep her on intravenous antibiotics, and after that, try to go back to oral antibiotics. If everything is ok, then she can be discharged.
But these 2 weeks are really critical, because there is a chance it can recur. If there is recurrence, then we must perform surgery.
Please pray for our family and that Katrina will fully recover very soon! Thank you again!
I will pray for your family. As a parent, we are so painful for sick baby, my bb is 4 mths only but he has bladder infection. he needs to take 3mths antibiotic or longer. Add oil, we try our best to take care baby, they all will get well soon.
I feel so painful when I read through your message, as my Baby did submit to hospital several times since birth.
Be Strong and your little baby need your love and strength to support her. You are so great that you keep breastfeeding your baby no matter how hard it is, I'm sure your baby can feel your love and will recover soon.
totally feel your pain too, karenkk, as my baby boy had been admitted twice to the hospital after birth, one for influenza and one for intussucception (intestine problem), and he had to do a surgery on his abdomin the 2nd time around. it's really saddening to see the baby in needles but i guess somehow babies are stronger than we thought, as i saw many babies/toddlers playing happily around the hospital (including my son) w/ those drip needles on their arms.
really happy for you that things are getting positive and hope tkat katrina can be discharged and return to her home sweet home soon.
definitely understand that it's not easy to continue breastfeeding while your baby is in the hospital and you have to work. hope you can still hang on. i'm sure it will all pay off.
we're always here to support you. do keep us posted!
Thanks so much for all your support! Katrina is discharged from the hospital today. The doctor says that since the pus has been drained, there has been a lot of improvement and the most critical time should have passed. Now we just need to continue to keep her on oral antibiotics for a while.
I am really happy that she is back home and I think she is also happy to be back as well. She seemed to have missed all her friends (toys) and was trying to talk to them after coming home.
