My husband is holding the british citizen passport and I have to give birth in the U.k., in order to get a U.K. passport for our baby. Anyone knows if I can give birth in the government hospital over there? How much it costs? Will the immigration officer allows me to enter the country of U.K. when I'm 36's weeks pregnant? Thanks!

Its free of charge to give birth in UK hospital as long as u have NI (national insurance and registered with a GP)

but I would not recommend you to just turn up in a hospital during yr labour in case of any complication or emergency. NHS is currently under pressure too and there some cases, they turn people away because they don;t have enough resources (I cannot imagine if u don;t even registered with a GP or have any check up in UK)

I think ur child can still apply for UK passport even he/she is not born in UK as the father is UK citizen.

I am not sure if the immigration officer will allow u in when u are 36wk pregnant.

if u really want to give birth in UK, I would think u better arrive early and register with a GP first. don't do what the chinese from china do and just turn up in the hospital. people will not be too happy having to handle such cases. think if u are a UK citizen and their benefit being taken away simpily because people from other places didn;t follow the rule. I hope u do understand.

Thanks for all your info. We've checked with the immigration office, since my husband got his british passport from his parents, that's why I need to give birth in U.K. in order to get the british passport for our baby.
I am planning to register with the GP upon my arrival in U.K. in August. However, my husband has been away from U.K. for quite long time and he doesn't have NI. So, what should I do?? Thanks....

In order to register with a GP, u also need to have an address prove. They usually accept council tax bill or other utility bills. How come yr hubby doesn’t have NI number if he is UK citizen? Also u have to have yr own NI number and cannot use yr hubby NI number. So u first have to get yourself a NI number. You have to go to their office, fill in a form and question by the officer then wait for few weeks (4-6 wks) at least before u can get yr NI number. Once u have yr NI number and prove of address then u can register with a GP. (bear in mind that they can refuse to register u if they are full). Then u can make appointment to see a GP or midwife which might take days depend on if they are busy or not. So by the time u get all these done, u bb might be born already. so I would no suggest u to arr on 36wk. if u really want to give birth in UK, I would suggest u come asap. Definitely no later than 30wks (from personal point of view). By the way, when is yr due date? And where are u going to stay upon arrival? U got any family here who can look after u? wish everything go well. All the best

On applying for a NI number: If I remember correctly, one needs to have proof of resident status (eg. a valid visa for your stay in the UK, but not short stay entry visa stamped at the airport immigration), proofs of attempts to look for jobs, etc. to show the officer at the JobCenter Plus interview. You can apply to change your visa type to stay in the UK after your arrival but it will take months. So you might need to check with British Consulate in HK for another type of clearing to enter the UK, if there is one applicable.

For NHS registration, I don't remember giving them my NI number. I wasn't working by then and they had not asked me for it. Some GP asks for proof of address but some don't.

Even if you decide to come here ASAP, it does appear to me that you're very short of time to go thro' all NI & NHS registrations, antenatal checks, etc.

almaly n pigpig78.. thanks for yr info. Actuall, my due date is in Oct and i'm planning to go there in Aug. I've also heard that I can do a self referral to the hospital if it's not enough time for me to visit the GP. Is that true?

Also, my husband wasn't born in U.K. but he used to study there for few yrs. By the time he was there, he didn't get the NI number. Then he went back HK for work. Now I 'm pregnant and we plan to get a british citzenship for our baby, that's why I plan to give birth in U.K. Maybe I ll go to live there with my baby when the baby starts going to school(but not planning to live there at this stage).

I've checked with the British consulate and they told me there is no such VISA(to give birth in UK) to apply. But of course I can give birth in UK because my husband is British passport holder.

For my situation, what u guys think is the way for me
to do??? Of course it will be better if i dont have to pay to give birth there la... But it wouldn't be a problem to get and address proof because I'm not going to live with our relatives n I'm planning to rent an apartment there. .. thanks!

I knew airline just allow pregnant lady by plane when they are before 7 mths pregnant. Then as you said that your husband and you haven't work in UK, and haven't NI, that means you both haven't pay tax.....................so how do you gave birth in UK without pay the fee?

How long did your husband study in UK?? As I knew that, it must study for 10 yrs to apply to be Birtish Citizen.

He got his citizen from his parents not because he studied there. Also, I have checked with airlines and they do allow pregnant women travel up till 36 weeks.
I heard from the others that some hospitals dont even check your NI number but of course some do. I am wondering in case they dont check his NI number and we can provide address proof to the hospital. Do you think this works??

現在好多醫院都好嚴架啦，咁遲才登記，真的好難講架，好多GP都爆啦，好多新搬來的都唔可以登記了..............

not to say whethe u can register with a GP without NI or proof of address.
are u sure u can rent an apartment in time when u arrive?
assumed u found an apartment before arriving uk, u still have to wait for few weeks before u get any proof of address.
also a lot of agent need reference letter or other proof on order to rent an apartment. so u have to make sure u have all the info needed before hand,

as twingirl said, its getting more and more difficult to register with GP given the large amount of immigrant at the moment.

Also I am not so sure re the self referral to hospital unless its private hopsital.. now hospital is very busy, I heard some cases, even the british people who been having all the regular check up throughout the pregnancy, they still turn them away as there no space in the maternity ward. so I am not sure how likely they will accept yr self referral.

i am really sorry that I could not give u more info re this issue.
if u are really keen on having yr bb in uk, I would suggest u to arr uk asap and not wait till Aug. also make a contingency plan to give birth in private hospital in case things didn;t work out the way u want.

You need your own NI to get registered, your husband's NI is not going to be helpful. But like what twingirls said, neither of you haven't paid any NI, why do you come here to give birth...
Travelling by 36 weeks by air is very risky as it is 12+hr flight. Many of my UK colleagues will fly back to UK to give birth latest by 28 weeks. Do not over-estimate your strength.

true, airline do allow pregant lady to travel up to 36 weeks, but if airline is in doubt if uk will allow you enter the country, they can refuse to carry you.
as you are not holding UK passport, that means you are only a vistor, it's hard to explain to the officer you are only coming to "visit" the country when you are just 4 weeks away from giving birth.

I"m much concern about the UK custom may give you hard time if you are not the UK passport holder, they will doubt the purpose you entry UK, also you are pergnancy. They may refuse you entry or only allow you stay for a short period. So pls well arrange.

我既NHS MEDICAL CARD, 係係HOSPITAL REG. 架, 無問過我NI, 不過係7年前, 同埋當時我仲係STUDENT, 不過都無用學生証PROOF, 我有個朋友程況差唔多, 只要你有dependent visa, 甘你就可以申請nhs medical card, 唔一定要有nI 架, 但係係NHS免費Services 係需要住係英國已經over 3個月, 如果少過呢個日子, 就算有nhs card, 都要自己pay, 因為你老公係BC 2代, BB一定要係英國出世先可以係BC, 不過你地本來唔係住係UK, 甘如果你要 stay 係uk , 你就要有dependent visa 丫, 但你老公又無係uk工作, 我諗幾難申請visa.

正如sbever 所講, 你首先要去英國領事館申請 Dependent Visa, 咁你先可以响英國居留 (唔係旅遊). 有Visa 去登記GP 應該OK, 登記GP無需要有NI number, 但係地址証明就可能要, 因為始終搵GP 係按照你住個區去登記. 嚴格黎講, 好似去銀開户口咁, 地址証明係要有你名嘅utlity bill (水費、council tax bill.....). Airline 限制就每間有少少唔同, 你自己check 清楚.
