For me, I think 最難適應 is not much close friends in 美國. Even I met some friends back in my college years here, but our relationship still not as close as those high school friends in HK. Other than that, everything seems ok for me ... bigger house, better environment & air for kid.

Are you full time stay home mom? How long have you been in the State ah? I think if you can find a job you like, you can be easier to 適應 your new life here.

何止呀, 老公重要成日出business trip, babesiu, 我的situation同你一樣, 所以我絕對有共鳴 , 我個奶奶仲十分not understanding, 因為佢, 我同老公仲成日頂頸.
My daugther and I just came here for 4 months, 依家仲努力適應緊, 我個女得17個月, 所以我冇返工.
How long have you been here? Are you full time mom?
I think it is better to find a job here. I think you will be adapt your life here if you can work here. To my experienced, I go out everyday with my daughter to the park and somewhere after I got the driving license. So that to make some friends or get familiar with this area. Besides, I also enrolled into the classes in community center with my daughter.

Don't be too worry la ... even it might be easier to find a good job if you have degree, some of my friends don't have degree also have a good job ah.

唔識揸車 also not a big problem in SF ah ... public transpotation is not too bad here. Also, not too difficult to pass the driving test here ga ... to get driver license here is alot easier than in HK.

If you finally make the decision to start your new life with your bf ... if you need help in SF, you can message me la (if you want). I also曾經初到貴境, I knew that it will be easier to adapt to new area if someone can give you a hand.

Good luck la

babesiu,
Don't worry, it's not too difficult to get used to the new environment. Plan for the best and expect for the worse. I also earned very good money in HK and I was an Associate Director. Now, I can only have 2/3 of the previous pay and only an Admin Assistant. But, think about the better side - better air quality, simplier lifestyle, more benefits. I don't have a driving license yet and I have been in SF for almost 4 years lar. Transportation is quite convenient in SF City. Where's your BF's home? Even though you need to get a driving license, it is not too difficult. I must have passed it already if I were not pregnant 2 years ago.

The easier way to get used to the new place is to find new friends, to know the place and to find a job. When you have a job and make new friends, you will feel much better. A degree is not a must for a good job, experience and communications skills are more important.

When you plan to come over, inform us BK moms in SF and see how we can help you.

babesiu,

what kinda merchandiser are u?

i hv a friend who's a merchandiser in NY while she lives in NJ. she doesn't have a degree but she'd been helping her own parents in their garment factory in HK after she graduated from high school. she's been trying to find a job in NJ but it's not as easy as in NY.

if for merchandiser for the field of garments, the only big employer i can think of in SF are Levis and GAP.

that's all i know ...

Hi babesiu,

I live in Daly City. The public transportation is not as good as in SF. That's why I learnt to drive. It is quite hard for the first year. I learn to drive, go to school to learn English and I was so busy to take care of my two kids. After the first year, I think you could get used to.

HappyMat, 100% agreed with you.
I studied in the States and went back to Hong Kong after graduation in 1999. I will move back to the States with my husband and son (3 months old) next April. I feel bad about this move already because I don't know whether I can adapt the life here again.

無朋友? 成日對住老公同老爺奶奶? 點適應呢?

hi babesiu,

i live in chicago, get a driving liencens is a must over here.

my case is same as you if you dicided to move to US, since i moved to chicago few years ago, i left my family, friends and a dream job for my husband. although he is very nice to me and love me, all people around me said it is worth. However, some feeling inside my heart that people don't understand. maybe i expect too much.

I have no problem with my husband, however to his parents, it is sucks. his parents came from mainland china, their thinking and culture is so different to hong kong people, but luckily, we are not living together, otherwise, i move back to hk long time ago, that's what my husband said.

you will leave all you good friends, although you will have your bf with you, but you will still feel lonely sometimes. b'cos the time you hang out with friends is different to with your husband. so every time i come back to hk, i really enjoy to meet my old friends. sometimes i just wish my husband can give up everything to come to hong kong with me. however, he got a good job in US, that's why i sacrifice.

for career, don't think that you will get a job and like it as in HK, i guess the pay will be higher, but you will face culture differences, language, and hard to make friend from work. it's not as happier as in HK. although they said there is no discrimination. that's bull shit. as long as you are native speaker.

In hk, you will have parent or housemaid to look after your kid and do the housework for you. it is very expensive to hire a housekeeper in US. so you just have to do all things by yourself. yeah, no "bun-mui".
hope it won't scare you, but it's the reality.

so, finally, what do i do now, i have a different view of my life now. i can't expect the live here will be same as in HK, it has changed since i moved here.
i'm a full-time stay-home mom look after my 16 months old baby girl. why, b'cos i couldn't find a dream job here, why not i just give all my heart to my baby. my husband also supported me.

parenthood is challenging but also rewarding in return when my baby do something funny or achieved something. sometimes i feel a bit boring stay home, then i will think of something to do with my baby such as to take class for her, go to library for storytime, do some reading at home or teach her things. i guess i will work again when my baby turns 2 years old, then she will go to day-care.

just think about your life will be changed when you get married, you are no longer to live for yourself only but also your baby and your husband.
do you have a plan to back up the answer "NO" to your bf?
have you plan for your baby's future, not just eduction, but a family for her.
