Phuket is not big, you can imagine it is more or less the same as Macau. Early Feb this year, I bought package there accompanied with my husband & 1.5yrs boy, we book tour at hotel or Patong beach, very easy & relaxation.
Join tour will be a little bit cheaper, tour will stay at 1 hotel in the whole journery, so, if you don't like to join the tour actitives or you want to have a spa, you just tell the guide that you prefer to go out yourself, also ok, of course need to pay tips as normal.
