When my older one was younger, i tried flash cards, but he didn't like them very much. he was more into reading baby/kid books with himself, so i just let him. then he started your baby can read when he was 2.5 yrs old, learned very fast (basically memorizing the words) but then he lost interest in a few weeks. so he was switched to leapfrog phonic dvds when he was 3, still loves them and he really understands. althought sometimes he is very 搞笑﹐tells me 哥哥 starts w a G and 蛋糕 starts w a D and 爺爺 starts w a Y, etc .. but it's ok, as long as he's interested in it and i believe sometime later he will know the difference btw chinese and english lol..
preschooler channel on TV, Noggin, has lots of very educational preschooler programs w no violence and it's commercial-free.
they do have a few programs online. you can chk out at noggin.com for more infomation.
my boys basically learn from preschooler programs, throught playing and exploring. i didn't teach them writing chinese but just talking to them in cantonese.
same here.. I don't really concern about chinese learning at their early stage, I would rather them to concentrate in English, pick up 1 language and use it fluently. that is very important to make their lives easier.
Amanda is 5 years old, and she starts to interest in Chinese.. she will borrow books from school library, those are book teaching chinese characters. and she interested to learn to sing twinkle twinkle little star in chinese.
I believe.. learning language should be fun, no pushy.
I will wait until she gets older. Then, we will let her learn chinese. In fact, do any of you feel like... kids growth up in US, speak better mandarin than cantonese??
Amanda can speak and sing Mandarin perfectly, however, she have very strong ascent on Cantonese.
Amanda love Noggins as well, also we do the online program and also the CD rom from Walmart/friends.
At home, we speak cantonese, and mix with English. Amanda has no problem to understand our conversation.
She loves to read the scrapbook I made for her and she will try to read the words from it.. haha I believe that I made the right thing. she has to learn chinese to read her scrap book.
