OEM version Pioneer 16x DVD writer round $750 - sold under another company's name (I forgot the name) but is pioneer DVD and with pioneer document.
Orginal Pioneer 16x DVD writer is around $1000. Other brands are even cheaper. Personally I think 8X is OK.
You can buy a 1394 and/or USB external case at about $200-$350 that is very easy to install.
"OEM version Pioneer 16x DVD writer round $750" I was told there is no one year "official" warranty (because they are "water-stock").
"Orginal Pioneer 16x DVD writer is around $1000." Last Friday, Pioneer 16x DVD - Double layer is around HK$1,050! Other brands e.g. NEC, NU, LiteOn Double layer are all around $6xx - 7xx.
Please read "C weekly" issue of this week, they have done a very good comparison of all 16x dvd 燒碟機. This gives a very good reference for you to choose the right brand.
hbbdad,
can you explain a bit more?
did you mean that 買條 usb 2.0 to IDE cable connect directly with the DVD writer and no need to fix the DVD writer in a case first?
and how to 外接火牛?
and DVD writer HK$5xx, which brand recommand for this price?
thanks.

Yes!但會受制於usb本身既傳送速度導至dvdrw去唔到原本既max燒錄速度/穩定性!
>>how to 外接火牛?
條usb to ide cable附送一個火牛比你,照插就ok!

chk this ~here~
"買條 usb 2.0 to IDE cable connect directly with the DVD writer and no need to fix the DVD writer in a case first?" --- does this method do the same way to CD writer? if so, that mean we can spend under $300 to make something like an external CD writer for our notebook?
but u should bear in mind that, as I state b4, the "writting" speed is limited to that transition of usb, not the CD-RW/ DVD-RW itself; & so the stability issue, ok?
For the current 16X DVD writer, it will not be limited by the USB 2.0 high-speed. The 16XDVD writing needs around 23MBytes/s while USB2.0 high-speed can achieve more than than. However It will be limited by the CPU speed, the USB IDE bridge and by the DVD writer itself. Some DVD writer uses UDMA mode 2 with max 33M bytes/s that works fine under mother board IDE. However UDMA mode 2 together with USB can't smoothly achieve the 16X write. If the DVD writer uses UDMA mode 4, it will be much better.
The new USB IDE brdiges with cases can support UDMA mode 4 and dont' have such limiation but I can still see a USB-IDE cable that works very slow and doesn't support UDMA mode 4.
