My baby always cries after she has taken my milk. She seems not satisfied of the amount that she takes. She can only feel satisfied if I top up formula. All mothers, is it possible to top up formula immediately after breast-feeding? Thank you!
how old is your baby, assume she is newborn.
how long does the feeding take ? do you offer both breast or one side, those are the critical questions for judgement.
if you give her the formular after breastfeeding, eventually , your milk supply will drop and you will have insufficient milk to your baby.
New born requires the breastmilk frequently, per my experience, my son needs it every 1-1.1/2 hour, which i feeded him for more than half hour, so i was so tired at that moment. also , if you everytime give her the formular after the breastfeeding, she will take it as a practise, and later she will prefer sucking into the bottle as it can be easier to drink the milk normally, and may not prefer to suck into your breast.
first of all, you have to ensure :
1) you are feeding her in proper position.
2)her mouth opens widely and not only suck into your nipple.
3) she has 6-8 wet diapers everyday(urine)
4) she can gain at least 125gm per week, = 1/2 kgs
per month.
if above is yes, don't worry, she can get enough milk, and do not limit her feeding time and schedule.
also, if you are not sure of above, you can either take her to health center, and feed her in front of the nurse, or share with us, or call the breastfeeding hotline.
I am facing the same problem as you. I also need to give him formula after I breastfeed him. My baby is borned on Nov 7. As per a lot of BK bf mums, it is not good to feed him formula afterwards....so I will try my best not to give him formula now (I hope I can do it).
How old is your baby??? New born??? If your baby is a new born baby then don't worry!! Just feed him / her as per his / her request. I fed my boy every 30 mins within the 1st 3 months. If your baby get 6-8 diapers a day then it shows she / he is full. There is a lot of reasons why the baby cries after the meal. Maybe he / she wants you 抱!Just keep to feed your baby directly then your milk volume will be increased.
Thank you very much for all your help. My baby was born on 19Nov. At QE, she was already given formula after breast-feeding since poor milk supply the first two days. The nurse also said my baby eats more than other baby.
monmantong, you are correct, my daughter prefers to suck into the bottle. She began to refuse to suck into my nipple. So, I pump off milk for her... however, if she does not suck into my nipple, my milk supply will not be increased at all. I can only pump around 4 ozs each time only... !! I really feel very sad when she refuses me everytime. I am a total failure.
don't be disappointed! i am sure you can do this !
same as Wendy_ho, you should feed her by spoon if you are not directly feeding her. since your baby is still very small, you can easily adjust her and correct her now.
pumping 50 mls is not too bad, per my experience, i only pump out 2 ozs after 1.1/2 months of baby born, which i used almost 45 mins.
since your milk supply is not yet estabished well, of course you cannot pump so much; remember eventhough you only pump out 1 oz, 2 ozs, which you can accumulate them into more , so your baby will consume less formular, right. so, keep it on.
Not all the mothers can have a very smooth breastfeeding roads, trust yourself that you can do this, otherwise, it will affect your milk supply.
also, if you do not give your baby formular, she will feel very hungry which she has no choice , so she must suck into your breast.
you are so great la!!! Even myself I can only pump 4oz when my boy was 4mths!!! your baby is 奶咀乳淆, since she is still small then you can practice practice and practice. You can feed her directly when she feels hungry as it is more easily for her to learn.
BTW, don't give the milk formula for her as it will caused you reduce the milk supply and your baby has no chance to learn!!!!
