我覺得only close the schools then re-open it's not enough/useful.
我有lum過同仔仔返香港避下﹐但係又驚係飛機上俾人傳染到﹐唯有nei係屋企﹐除左買送先出街。
本來仲lum 著終於等到夏天(cos BB was born in sept, stay at home the whole winter)可以帶仔仔去park去街街﹐宜家安全起見﹐都係最好stay home la..
I don't know if it's because I have been in the US for too long and I wasn't in HK during SARS period. I am also like the people here 當無事發生. I do have some surgical masks in my car just in case I need it. Usually when I am in the store and see people cough etc, I immediately go to some other aisles or cover my face and 閃開. Though I know the person may have the flu even if they do not cough/fever (in the beginning).
I usually use the anti-bacterial rub/wash my hands once I get back to the car or before/after I eat etc. I also wipe my son's hands often. I also try to avoid crowd places and I don't take public transportation.
i did similar things as you. i think we'd already been "extra cautious" ...
it's true that the people in HK are more concerned about it.
that made me struggling if we should be visiting HK during the summer break. i have neighbors and my son's classmates are visiting their grandparents in HK, India and Europe for summer.
NYC is not as crowd as in HK, the situation is different.
Also, for regular flu, in US .. like last year, 1 flu seasons normally report 50 death. And what we can see.. it doesn't even reach it at all.
To ask the whole NYC to close school..
that may be a bit paranoid.
I guess, you may need to sit back and relax, you still can go outside, fresh air good for you and your baby, go to the park, go to the open air area. Avoid over-crowded or central air-cond place such as shopping mall, supermarket, library etc.
That should be fine.
As I teach in public at last month- Swine flu, what you should do when you return home, wash hand, change clothes, and wash face before you touch anything.
As your lil one not even starts to walk, you have less worry for your lil one to get germs by touching thing outdoor.
You can set up some family gathering with Queens moms, 1-2 families, 2-3 young kids play at home, have a small tea party, that may help you to reduce your stress. Certainly, have to make sure every one is good and ok for party.

my son will have summer break of less than 2.5 months.
if we're not going to HK or anywhere else for summer, of course i'll sign him up for some fun activities. otherwise, he'll be bored staying at home. i'll be even busier taking him to here and there.
Do they give student any homework for the summer break? When will his summer break start? If you are going to HK, you may need to book the ticket soon then. :) I just thought it may be too hot in HK in July/August? Or you can just stay home (in HK) and relax actually.

bunnymonkey,

his school gives homework to them every day except for weekends, holidays and school breaks.
i haven't been to HK for summer for a long long time, but i still remember it was very hot when we were there in Sept last time.
starting from elementary school, the longest break will be summer break; other than that, only 2 weeks for Christmas/winter break. if u wanna go out of the country and stay for at least 2 weeks, summer is the best time to go.
I booked air ticket and paid for them at May.
We, include Bernadette will stay in HK for 3 weeks.
However, when I read the news (from HK), HK people do not welcome us<--people come from US, especially NY
