How would you plan to travel around new zealand by car in 14 days? Our first and last stop will be in Auckland. Can anyone share their experience. Many Thanks.
My husband and I had been to NZ by rental car several years ago. Our journey lasted for 2 weeks too. We started the journey from Auckland, then had black water rafting on the way to Rotorua. Next stops were Taupo and Wellington. Across the strait to South Island, we went to Nelson, Franz Josef glacier, Milford Sound, Queenstown and Mount Cook. The last stop was Christchurch where we caught a flight to HK via Auckland.
The journey from Rotorua to Wellington is very long. I suggest skipping Taupo and Wellington. To save traveling time, you may take a domestic flight from North Island to South Island. South Island is comparatively more beautiful and I suggest spending more time on it.
I also travelled to NZ several years ago by car. We drove from Auckand to Wellington (non-stop) where we took the ferry to the South Island. Because we arrived Wellington early, we sightseeing the capital for around 2 hours. The route from Auckland to Picton was long. It took us almost the whole day to reach Picton.
On the way back to Auckland, we stopped at one town (which I could not recall the name now) at the North Island for farm stay and we stayed there for one night where we rode horse, picked blue berry, saw the pigs, cows and even possum... We then stopped at Rotorua for another night. I would say Rotorua is worth to go.
Do visit tourist information centers wherever you reach one and get all leaflets and you will find a lot of fun places to go. Thanks to the leads from the center, we visited a salmon farm and picked our own fish from the canal and had the freshest salmon sashimi in my life with a very peaceful and gorgeous scenery.
The trip to NZ is just so memorable and enjoying. I still recall this trip from time to time. Hope you would have a great trip.
