public school or private school? there might be different.
my daughter is in grade 10. if comparing to what i had learned in hk when i was in F.4, i can say, the standard is lower. (i was in band 1 school). the maths, shakespeare's play, physic, chem, biology she is learning now, i knew most of these when i was in F.1 or between F.1-3. however, she is very happy, no pressure at all. enjoy going to school. this really depends on what you want; and the individual.
however, the competition to go to university is keen, except do not need to sit for public exam. what i understand is marks of G.11 and G.12 is the key to university.
assume that you might want to go to university after the secondary education. if you are not canadian, please also consider the university fee. the cost of university fee is increasing each year, even for local students. if you are canadian and living in canada, you may contribute for Registered Education Saving Plan (RESP) if the student is under 15 years old. the govt will pay $0.2 (max $500) for every $1 you contribute each year. i can provide more some info if you want, as i work in one of the four RESP providing company in canada; and we had a good returns every year, a 9.75% for 2009.

Hi, ckkwkl,

My kids are studying in international schools in HK, my elder kid has to take GCSE and IBD exams. As the school fee is getting higher and higher and IBD seems to be very difficult, I am considering sending her back to Canada after GCSE O level to study G11-12.

Do you know if it is easier to enter popular universities in Canada through IBD or Canadian Diploma? I heard that the competition of entering Canadian Us is very keen now, how difficult is it?

Please give me some advice. Thanks a lot.

I went to see my daughter's guidance teacher to seek for advice this afternoon regarding choosing subjects for G.11. the three of us sat together.
1) providing him with what my daughter interest is to choose subjects
2) asking which university/college is providing the related course
3) what is the minimum requirement for each of this, the cost etc.
4) what is the career opportunity of her interests; and what will be the career path etc.
5) scholarship inquiry ...

i do not know anything about IBD exams, as this might be the requirement of students overseas (not in canada to take in entering university in canada). he told me that there is no public exam to take to get into the university/college, candidate applies to the university/college that they wish to go to if they fulfill the minimum requirement - using the second term result of g.11 and first term result of g.12 in school. therefore, it is very important for students to obtain a good score during these two terms. they can apply as many university/college as they like, depending on the university/college will accept them or not. the university/college will also consider on their resume sent in :
- any involvements in community services
- related experience (e.g. my daughter is interested in journalism/photography - she is editor of school year book, newsletter etc.)
- any working experience (suggest her to work for summer job in related industry or as a co-ops in school program)
he told me that the competition in entering university is very keen now. take for an example, as i saw from ryerson university for journalism is 30 students and minimum of 81 marks. so if you want to be in journalism in U of Ryerson, i don't think you can get in with only 81 marks among all candidates.
there will be a university fair held in september 2010. info for all universities can be found as all universities/colleges will be attending. usually, all g.11 students and parents will be provided info by school early sep; and are advised to go.

Thanks a lot for your info. IBD is an international exam, as I know, there are a few High Schools in Canada offering this to very top students only. It is not easy to get a high score in IBD for entering U as well.

Your daughter's school is very good! Is it public? Mind telling me which one (maybe by PM)? Thanks.

Thanks. I heard that the High School Pierre Elliott Trudeau in Markham is very popular and rank very high, do you know if it is really very good? Is it because the students are mainly Chinese?

Seems that even though we think that studying in Canada should be more relaxed than in HK, Chinese parents in Canada are very anxious about academics, they like to enroll the kids to many after school academic classes such as Kumon, right? Just afraid that the peer pressure among Chinese students is just similar to that in HK!

i do not personally "know" this school, but have heard about high recommendations on this one. my daughters had not attended any academic courses, they only took japanese (elder) and chinese and mandarin (younger) during saturday - $20 annually, run by catholic school board.
