You have to work 40 quarters in order to qualify for retirements. BUT, retirement funds wont get you anywhere anymore. It's about ~1000 a month.

Lets say you are 50 yrs old. Your health insurance will be $400 to $500 a month depending your health condition, and progressively increase as you get older until 65. That's when the government willl cover your health insurance. For example, my parents, 63, and 59, are paying $1500 a month!!!!

If you are living in Chinese populated area, SF, LA, NY, Bos. You are looking at $1000 for an apartment up to $1500 for 2/3 bedrooms.

Food is about $20 a day if you cook every day.

Car insurance is about $150 a month with no prior insurance history. Single coverage maybe alot cheaper, $80/month.

Gas, and car, it's really depending what you do. Some buy Benz, and some buy Hyundai.

But basic cost is $1000 (rent) + $700-800 health insurance (2 ppl) + $150 (one way, 2 ppl) car insurance, gas about $300 a month, $600 food, $100-200 /month car maintainence/insurance (health/car) deductible, and $450 (Water, Garbage, Pacific Gas and Electrics, Cell phone, home phone, Internet, cable). If you are going to find a full time job, the health insurance may be cheaper. Otherwise, you are looking at 5 - 10% increase on health insurance every year.

$45000 a year with 10% year increment to get you started. Extra money for emergency if surgery, wear and tear on appliances, so on. Keep in mind that when the age reaches 65, you get a big cut in health insurance.

Good luck.

Do you only get a big cut in health insurance after age 65 only if you have worked 40 quarters? Or does everybody gets that regardless?

I believe you get health benefits from US gov as long as you are citizen... Probably not green card holder.

Are you referring to Medicare for the reduced cost health insurance after age 65?

Confirmed.

US Citizen or Permanent resident to receive Medicare.
Medicare

is a US Federal health Insurance program administered by the United Federal government, providing health insurance coverage to people who are aged 65 and over, or who meet other special criteria.

Special note for new immigrant:

If you are a new immigrant aged 65 and above, and been a permanent resident for 5 years or more, you may purchase Medicare from the government.

So it is true that you have to be a citizen over 65 or green card holder who live in US for more than 5 yrs to receive Medicare. 40 QUARTERS ARE NOT REQUIRED.

Hope this helps.

thanks Atyum. That helps a lot.

But if every US citizen gets the Meidcare at 65, what's that requirement of working 40 quarters for?

I've checked the official Medicare website, and found out that if you are a citizen over 65 but don't have 40 quarters of Medicare covered employment, you are NOT entitle to premium free Medicare benefits.

"Eligibility
1) US citizens & Permanent residents 65 or older, who or their spouses have worked and paid Medicare taxes in the US for 40 quarters."

So I guess any citizen over 65 can use Medicare but if you don't have 40 quarters of Medicare covered employment, you have to pay for it. Otherwise it's free.

Not sure what is the premium of Medicare? Is it still cheaper than private health care insurance?
