Have any of your kids had the newborn hearing screening test when they were born?
Since my older one did not have one when he's born, I refused to do it for my younger one when she's born at the hospital. I was a little concerned if there will be any side-effects although the pediatrician said it's ok.
Now I'm thinking if I should take her back to the hospital to have the test ....
Both of my kids have it, do not see any side-effects. Both tests turned out positive. Usually, hearing testing will be given to kids in annual checkup, cannot remember if it's given in monthly checkup when my kids were infants, too long ago

But my kids have annual hearing tests in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year, 5th year....my son has not have his 6th checkup yet because of prior sickness and doctor vacation.
It's standard protocol. Lot less side effect than blood tests! If you decline it, in CA we would have to report it to the state. It's state law. The hospital and pediatricians are responsible to talk to parents. Next reliable behavioral is 18 month old. We can test children at any age. The prevalence of hearing loss is 1%. High enough to warrant universal screening.
As a matter of fact, all babies born in HK have had the same screening. They just don't tell you that they have done it.
really?! the pedi also told us that the next hearing test will be at 5-yr-old unless there are symptoms of hearing problems or speech delay.
my older one also had his first hearing test at 4 or 5-yr-old before going to kindergarten.
i was told that risk of hearing loss is 1/1000 (i.e. 0.1%) so i thought it's kinda low.
i was told that the newborn hearing screening started in CA about 6-8 yrs ago depends on different hospitals.
anyway, since there are no side effects of the test, i might bring my baby back to the hospital to take the test soon. at the beginning, i heard that the brain wave activities from the baby will be detected, so i thought there might be side-effects to the brain.
hopefully she'll cooperate and pass the test. otherwise, the hospital won't offer another chance to retake the test as outpatient, and we'll need to take her to the audiologist's office.
As an audiologist, I would tell you to do it early. Cuz if a hearing loss is not detected by 3 years old, you miss the golden early intervention period. Hearing loss also leads to speech delay and articulation defects. I would strongly encourage you to get it done.
