Was it the federal tax or state tax that you filed for 6 years at one time? Can you legally do that? I mean, without filing any tax for the past 6 years and just file everything in one shot?
I did federal tax because I was not residing in CA. My last state of residence did not require us to file state tax for overseas income. I dot know how it worked legally. I threw all my paperwork and had the accountant take care of it. They specialize in taxation and know more than I do. But I did remember him asking me specifically whether my permanent address was CA. It must be a little more complicated for CA residents.

Where were you for the 6 years that you didn't file for federal tax? Hong Kong? I thought you were supposed to file for federal tax every year even if you were overseas?
We plan to move to CA next year or the year after and are currently looking into buying a house there. I am an US citizen but my husband is not (and he has no intention of becoming one). I am not sure who should own the house from tax perspective, or whether there is a difference. Maybe I should consult your tax accountant as well.
