a small private playgroup

Hi ladies,

I'm a full-time mom and I'm hoping to form a private playgroup for my daughter who's now 20 months old. I live in South Horizons.

I'm a Chinese American and I can't read too much or write Chinese but I can speak it quite well. I speak to my daughter in English exclusively while my husband speaks to her in Chinese. If any of you moms (of any ethnicity) out there would like to meet regularly on weekdays so that the little ones can play and grow together and become good friends (as us grown-ups will too :-P ), please send me a reply.

We can have outings and our own arts and crafts activities and sports and such (I used to play lots of sports). It'll be fun.

bbky ~

I'm also in S Horizons, and a full-time mom. But my son is now44 months. i.e, 3-3/4 months.

It is a wonderful period that you can set the time for her, and with other babies as your baby is 20 months..... by the time she has to attend school, it will be difficult to arrange outings and activities and sports. Therefore, .....enjoy!

Re: a small private playgroup

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I wouldn't mind getting together even though your son is older, especially since we're neighbors.

You're right in that this is a great time to spend with our babies doing stuff together. When they're older, they'd prefer to hang out with their friends.
I took up tutoring English for kids living in South Horizons after I quit my full-time job (I enjoyed working with kids more than working in the business world). And after I gave birth, I devoted all my time to my baby. The first few years together are so precious!

We've joined some playgroups but it would be so much nicer for my little girl to have some "brothers and sisters" in the area. We'll be in HK for a long while. Besides, I was hoping that other kids can get some practice with English as I speak to my baby in English exclusively, and in return, my baby'll be exposed to Chinese with Chinese speaking moms.

If you'd like to meet up, just let me know when. I'm in Tower 9, by the way.

Re: a small private playgroup

bbky,

I will be nice to meet you although I have to work. My little girl is also 20 months old and she will start going to pre-nursury in Victoria after the summer holidays. During weekdays, grandmother or my maid will take her to playground every day if the weather is fine.

Oh great, if you don't mind, let them play together.

In the kindergarten, some of the kids' parents might be non-Chinese, but they initially want their kids to learn and write Chinese.

And it's great to know one more neighbour -- gannet

Re: a small private playgroup

天天媽咪,

How do you do? My pleasure to know a new friend.

bbky,

Just to let you know that for the Mother Club for July 2004, a birthday party for their kids are being organised, will be held on July 2 or 9. You are welcome to join as well albeit you may be on the waiting list right now. However, the chance in joining the party is very high eventually. I have joined the 1/2-year-old and the 1-year-old birthday party with them before. My little girl enjoyed very much.

Re: a small private playgroup

Hi gannet,

Thanks for the info but I'm a bit clueless as to the "Mother Club" and their activities. Do you mean there's a page/link on this website that will give me the details for the birthday party in July? Is there any way you can direct me to the link or give me more info? I'd love to join as I'm sure my little girl would love it...she's quite active and loves company.

We will be going to the Toys Library at the Central Library tomorrow. Perhaps we can meet up with your daughter/grandma/ helper at the playground on Tuesday morning though I do look forward to meeting you soon.

"Tin Tin Mommy",

Thanks for your contact number. Please join us on Tuesday if you can. I'll probably give you a call tomorrow (I'm a bit exhausted today)

Talk to you soon.

Re: a small private playgroup

Ok gannet, I've found the info. It took me a while to figure out the chinese characters on the buttons.

Looks like there's a full list and probably a long waiting list as well...wish I had known earlier about the party. It would be great for my baby to join as we don't have any relatives here in HK and very few friends with kids of the same age...well, guess we'll just wait and see.

Re: a small private playgroup

bbky,

Don't worry! You will be able to join the party finally as I think YMCA is big enough to house more than 100 people.

Have you purchased the annual pass to Ocean Park? We are going to Ocean Park again this Easter holidays. I look forward to seeing the new jelly fish aquarium that is opened today. Any interest in going together?

Re: a small private playgroup

Hi ladies,

Wish to join the group since I am also in SH. Adrian is now 2y4m old. I also need to work like gannet but I could arrange my maid to take Adrian to play with your kids if you don't mind. I can join the Sat/Sun gathering as well.

I visited Ocean Park last month. They already had a small tank of jellyfish at that time though the Jellyfish Aquarium was yet to open. Very beautiful. Adrian likes them very much. Really worth visiting. But Easter holidays could be very crowded. I tend to skip this in Easter. Plan to visit Space Museum instead because Adrian likes planets (he thought they were balls).

Adrian is in Good Health pre-nursery since Feb this year. Kindergarten does make him happy if the kindergarten is caring like Good Health. And he improves a lot especially his social skill though he is still afraid of strangers to him quite often.

Re: a small private playgroup

Hi AdrianMommy,

Welcome...the more the merrier...but I've yet to meet up with anyone because I'd been feeling a bit under the weather since yesterday. Will inform you of the next meeting. By the way, how is Good Health pre-nursery? What do you like about it? I had wanted to call them for a school tour. Would be great to get a personal opinion from a mom.

gannet,

Thanks for the invite to Ocean Park. I'm afraid we'll have to pass this time as we've already made plans for the long weekend. Sorry for not having specified the time for this morning's meeting with your little girl as I've mentioned. Something had come up. Will keep you posted when I arrange the meeting with tintinmommy. And yeah, it would be great if we were included for the July party...I've already put my name down...really look forward to it.

Re: a small private playgroup

Adrianmommy,

Welcome! As alleged, my little girl will usually play in the playground in the afternoon for at least 2 hours. You / your maid can identify her so easily as she will bring along "Barney" (the dinosaur) whenever she goes. Normally she will go with grandmother if grandmother comes to our home.

bbky,

Please see whether you can meet her in the playground this week.

Re: a small private playgroup

gannet,

Will instruct my maid to find the "Barney" if Adrian goes to the playground. But Adrian usually has a long nap in the afternoon since he has been in kindergarten.

bbky,

About Good Health, I like its caring. The teacher of my son calls me every week just to update me his behaviour at school. I thought it was only in the beginning month during the adapting period but I still receive updates from teacher until now though less frequently. The updates are very useful for me to communicate with Adrian after school. Adrian also appears very happy when it seems to him I know what he does at school. This is the kind of caring I have not expected when I put him to Good Health.

Other than the teachers, the Principal is also very caring. From my observation, she knows the parents of every kid in her school. Right after you enter the school, the Principal starts to discuss with you about your kid. Only a very caring Principal can do that. I once attended an evening seminar arranged by Good Health. It is about how to enhance communication through reading with your kid, the speaker is a psychologist. Not only the content itself is very fruitful, the Principal took care of every bits of logistics. She joined the whole session with the parents until 10:00pm. In the morning of the same day, she was also at the school as my mom told me. I really appreciate how dedicated this Principal is.

And Good Health's approach encourages much parent sharing with kids. Like reading, they have a programme of reading books even for kids at pre-nursery. Each week, the school lends us a book to read. At the end of week, we need to produce "reading report". The "reading report" is to show how the kid likes the book by colouring more pictures. You can enrich as many as books you borrow from library yourselves or buy from outside. I love this programme very much and Adrian likes reading books. I buy a lot of books for Adrian and borrow books from library. Last month, I found a set of books in Mongkok worth just $150 for 50 books, each with only several pages just right for kids at age of Adrian. To rate a book how much Adrian likes, I would only colour all pictures (highest rating) if Adrian repeatedly requests me to read to him. :-P

For the K1 class, Good Health has the international (IP1-IP3) stream and the mainstream (K1-K3). In international stream, most of the literature will be in English and it will have 20 minutes of Chinese everyday. Kids also start to write Chinese at IP2. In the mainstream, the literature will be in Chinese and it will have some time of English everyday. There will be 3 days a week that English class is conducted by native speaking teachers for mainstream. I have chosen IP1 for Adrian to facilitate an English speaking environment to him.

Re: a small private playgroup

Hi Adrianmommy,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a thorough and lengthy feedback. With a better understanding of the school, I'll have some questions ready when we pay them a visit scheduled for next week.

I was late in sending in the application for Victoria which seems to be the more reputable school. When we got there, the staff wasn't as welcoming as I'd thought and they didn't even bother to invite us for a school tour which kind of turned me off a bit. I've heard good and bad things about Victoria, but their teach-student ratio seems better than Good Health, and they have more English native teachers...am I correct in saying this? Anyway, we'll have to wait and see.

I'd met up with Tintin and his mom this afternoon at a moment's notice so we weren't able to contact you. I will pm you my mobile number for next meeting. thanks again.

Hi gannet,

How was your day? Tintin mommy and I met up but with so many kids at the playground, it was impossible to spot your little angel anywhere. I'll pm you my mobile too so you can call me when she comes out to play.

Happy Easter to all you mommies and babies.

Re: a small private playgroup

Hi all mammies, I just became a full-time mother two weeks ago - felt great! My son just turned 16 months. I would also like to join you all when baby knew how to walk by himself and when he can eat better (he has some gagging/vomit problems unfortunately). I am living in Tower 30. Please keep me in touch for any activities going on and I would like to join you guys at a later stage. Thanks all!

Re: a small private playgroup

bbky,

I also had some bad feeling with Victoria before. I did not accept their offer to Adrian in the next term.

I am still considering more long term arrangement for easier entry in primary. But that may require travelling to school by bus or other means. I don't think that is good for kids at 2. So for pre-nursery and K1, I prefer kindergartens at SH.

Hi Betchow,

Welcome to the "full-time mom" club. It feels great, doesn't it...to be able to spend time with your dear baby as this time is the most precious. Were you working full time previously? Sorry to hear about your little one's problem...don't worry, I'm sure it will pass. Hey, feel free to contact me if you want to chat, even for a short while.

Re: a small private playgroup

Dear All,

We have a small group already. While Adrianmommy and I have to work, shall I suggest we meet one night after dinner (say 21:00) in the promenade so that our kids can meet and play for a short while before sleep. While the weather is not stable these few days, we can confirm sometime next week.

Any other better suggestion?

Re: a small private playgroup

Great suggestion. This is best time for my kid as he will still be on Easter holidays next week, no need to go to bed early for school next day.

gannet, I will PM you my mobile#.

bbky, please check PM.
