各位 US mom 你們好 !!!!!
我剛剛 check 到 bingo 咗，好開心呀 !!!!

等我自我介紹小小先 :
我攞咗永久綠咭十幾年 la~~因工作 & 老公嘅關係，所以我從來冇喺 US 住過 !!!!但我自己嘅 relative，全部都住喺 NYC。咁多年嚟，我都係攞回美証出入。

自從知道有咗 BB 後，就心思思想喺 NY 生，我嘅預產期係 06 年 7 月頭，打算 easter 後就過 NY 待產。但因冇喺 NY 生活過，所以對 NYC 醫療、保險一無所知 (我冇喺 US 買保險)！My dad & mom 年紀又大、又唔係好識英文，幫唔到我攞資料，所以我想問吓各位 NY mom 可唔可以幫吓我！

我想問：
(1) 冇買保險嘅綠咭 holder，可唔可以享有醫療福利？
(2) 如果享受唔到醫療福利，要自己揾私家 dr.，咁要幾多餞？(產檢 & 生產總開支)
(3) 我見 Nillie_mami 介紹個 dr.Mary Wong，如果睇佢，係咪可以全程講廣東話？間 Beth Isreal hospital，又是否可以講廣東話？( 因我 D 英文都唔係好得

Hi nami_dadi,

I live in NYC too. Hopefully, I can answer some of your concerns (sorry, I don’t have the Chinese writing pad so I have to type in English…). In regards to question 1&2, you 冇買保險, so you probably 唔可以享有醫療福利, but you can always apply the government low income 醫療福利 plan. It may take two to three months to get the approval. Once you get approved, you only have to pay a minimal fee to give birth in the hospital. 如果享受唔到醫療福利，要自己pay 生產 fee, it is in US $15,000 range.

My friend gave birth in Beth Isreal hospital few weeks ago. When I visited her in the hospital, I saw some Chinese signs in the hall way. I think there are many Chinese patients around. Some of the staffs are Chinese, so they can probably assist you.

You can try to contact such as US Health Plus, Health Care Plus, I believe some of them will give you free medical insurance if you are qualify to the program. In order to qualify to the government low income program, you do need to provide the last year income tax report and some bank statement. You can also go to the clinic. They provide checkup in low charge but you do need to show them your income proof. You can always go to China Town on Manhattan (Canal Street), Flushing Main Street or Brooklyn 8th Ave, insurance company usually have some sale reps stand on the street to get business. You can talk to them to find out more information.
Without insurance, it could be 15000 but assuming everthing is fine. Like my case, I was hospitalized for 1 month because my water broke too early, and then I had complication during the delivery so I ended up had C-Section. The total bill for delivery my son was about $30000! Thanks God my husband insurance kicked in. So you do have to keep in mind that sometime things do happen. However, the safety of the baby and the mom always go first, the hospital does offer a lot of payment plan too.
Another choice is buy an insurance for the mom for now. I think the cheapest of the decent one - HIP is about $300 something. $300 x 12 months is about 3600 which is still cheaper than paying $15000 from your own pocket. Plus u can either add the baby to the program later on or apply low income plan for the baby so it is still a better choice.

1a. I would say, that you are pretty difficult to get the free medcaid because you are a green card holder.
You can try So cloudy and Darren_mama's method.. to apply Family Health Plus and other low income insurance.. but I would tell.. that is a bit hard.. as I work in hospital.. the chance is not very high
1b. if you want to try any kind of low income health insurance, did you pay for the income tax for US government every year since you are a green card holder? How much you earn per year? If over USD80,000 you better pay for tax this year at December time,before you come back to US for labouring. Did your husband work? remember it counts the whole house income.. also, it counts if you have any property worldwide!
1c. you have no problem to come back to US.. but I would suggest you this time.. you come back before your tummy show up, because you always use the 131 form, and this time if you come back when your big belly, the immigration will give you a hard day! even they must let you in. but really not worth!
2. For Dr. Wong, her clinic only accept medicaid under HIP, and HIP also have the program for low income and free medical as well.. so if you able to apply that, you will be fine..
2b. if you can not apply any low income insurance / medicaid, then for each visit is about USD100 (but no matter when you start your visit Dr. Wong will ask for USD1500 for total OB visit, you can separate the payment in times), for labouring in Beth Isreal hospital for natural birth is USD 15000, C-section is over USD 30,000.
3. Dr. Mary Wong 韓黃素敏 is cantonese speaking.. all her staffs speak cantonese as well, so you will be alright!

P.S.
1. If you want your child to become citizen, I would suggest you to settle down here, otherwise, it will not be good for your child.
2. Pay for the income tax to US government from this december.

re : Benefit for Green Card Holder during Pregnancy

In my case, I and my hubby are students. I hold a green card. In my state (KY), I am not eligibile to get medicaid due to not a citizen or living in US for 5 years.

So, our social worker suggest us going to Health dept to apply PE (Presumptive Eligibility for pregnancy woman). If you bring an adequate document (pregnancy proof letter and income) and meet their income level. You are able to get a temporarty medical card to cover all medical expesens (include lab work, ultra-sound, prscription, but exclude baby delivery) for 90 days. Below is the details of this program in KY, believe there is related program in different state. You can go to your state health dept to check.

Hope, this information is able to help those pregnancy woman (green card holder).
