I feed Willow from my breast.
I used to fed Francesca (my 1st born) for 40 mins~20 mins each side. But then my health visitor said new born just need 10 mins each side. Francesca used to suck so long just for comfort (like sucking a dummy), she couldn't get much milk after 15mins(one side).
Now, I feed Willow at least 5 mins each side (My boobs are so full that I keep leaking!!! So I feed her both sides). I sometimes stop her sucking when I think that's no milk there.
I feed Willow every 3-4 hours.
Routine:
change her nappy + wash her face to wake her up
feed her
play with her for a bit then she'll go back to sleep
I am aiming for a 4-hour-routine. So I always try to feed her every 4 hours. In this case, I just need to get up once at night. I did the same with my first born. She slept through the night at 6 weeks~8 hours quality sleep!!!
And...don't get hang up with how much milk does your baby take. they like us - sometimes they are hungry and sometimes not. If your baby just take 2oz this feed, he/she may take some more next time. They know how much they need.
Sometimes I need to top her up 2 hours after her feed because she is a very hungry baby. She was 4kg/8lb 13oz when she was born...>.< My sister-in-law has big baby too. She said she used to give her baby formula at the last feed before she went to bed to fill up her baby's tummy (formula milk takes longer for babies to digest, so babies tend to sleep longer as they feel full).
How did you train your baby to eat every 3-4 hours?
I am aiming to feed my baby every 3 hours (preferrably 4 hours), but that doesn't really work if my baby don't sleep during each meal.
I usually feed him when he cries, around 2 hours cycle in day time. 3 hours cycle in night time. The feeding time is 10-20mins for each meal. My feeding pattern is:
- feed him
- he poo poo during eating
- change diaper
- finish feeding
After feeding, sometimes he's awake, sometimes he slept during feeding.
If he is still awake after feeding, he'll ask for milk again in 1 hour's time. Otherwise, he can sleep for 2-3 hours.
I want to train my baby to eat/sleep/awake in your pattern, as this is what "On Becoming babywise" taught us and that way will help the baby to sleep through the night by 8 weeks old. Can you give me some hints on how to start the pattern?
