I had been to Maldive few yrs ago, I remember the bottle water was about US$1 or $2 each. But the hotel gave us 4 free bottles each day/room. In the hot sunny day, you definitely need a lot of bottle water. Apart from the water, the meals also costed a lot. We joined the package tour and only the breakfast was included. I remember the lunch costed around HK$800-$1200/day, which was not very yummy too. But we didn't have much choice because there is only one hotel in each island. If you want to go other islands or Male to have cheaper food, the transportation/water taxi will also cost a lot.
However, I still think Maldive is worth to visit at least once in a life time. And better to enjoy such beauty in a very relaxed mood, so don't plan your trip in a very tight schedule n as well.
Last year 2006 in early April, I have been to Maldives - Sun Island Resort for 6 days trip, stayed at their Water Bungalow, it was really nice and wonderful. Dazzling sand, brilliant blue seas and an idyllic setting made this a very pleasant holiday overall.
We hired bikes to get around the island (quite a big island when compared to the others) which was great fun, also we saw a lot of sting rays, baby sharks and a load of fishes, we ever fed the sting rays in every nights.
The food was good in the main restaurant, always such a good selection ...
Although the total package cost quite an expensive (your budget HK$30K for two is okay but marginal), someone said that they can spend the same $$ to Europe or elsewhere they thought worth to..
However, if you love sun, beautiful beach, blue crystal water and natural environment, - - > I still think Maldives is worth to visit at least once in a life time.
