I returned to Australia with my little boy in 2005 when he was 19months. I experienced difficulty when trying to get him into an early-learning school (Montessori as they have a 2-years-ago program) because it is so popular here (in Melbourne) that parents need to enrol their first little ones before they are borned. I felt disadvantageous as my son is the only one (no sibbling advantage) and couldn't have enrolled earlier than he arrived Australia.
Asian here are very concerned about their kids' education and often are more willing to send their kids to private schools. I think I am one of them la! But, anyway, more Australian parents are adapting to the same mindset now.
I am really worried that there is also a long waiting lists for prep enrolment into those popular private schools. In May this year, my little boy was marginally given a place in a popular kinder (in the suburb I live) even though I put in his enrollment application May last year for a 3-years-age program due to start in 2008!
Hope to see more discussion and information exchange on Melbourne pre-school and primary education in this forum.
