Hi, I also agree with nikitac's comments too. As for questions 2 & 3, I think it's better for you to pay a site visit at Baptist Hospital and double-check with the hospital staff then. I gave birth by c-section at HK Adventist and I requested 100% breastfeeding. The hospital staff will roll in my baby to my room for BF whenever he's crying for hunger, no matter it's day or night.
But my baby's body temperature was a bit unstable during the first few hours so he had to stay in the nursery for monitoring, and therefore I couldn't feed him until 6 hours later. Anyway, the first feeding went well and he has no problem sucking the nipples for colostrum.
I read articles that babies have reserve when they're born so they can live without being fed for 2-3 days. And in fact, they stomaches are so tiny so even though we don't seem to have a lot of colostrum, that should be good enough for them. If you confirm with Baptist that they won't roll in baby to you for nursing while you need to stay in bed on the 1st day, you may try to pump out the colostrum and ask them to feed baby by cup or spoon. You may also want to specify to them if you don't want hospital to feed your baby with formula, or they can't feed your baby formula unless they seek your consent.
They will roll in your baby to your room? I don't think Baptist Hospital will have this service. As far as I know, they will provide this service only for Single Room Mother!
The second thing is; is it really possible to pump out the milk without baby's sucking action? Isn't it due to the first sucking action, the milk goes out? Sorry that I'm too ignorant about that!
I was indeed staying in private room so I could room-in my baby anytime of the day, or even have my baby staying with me overnight. However, I'm pretty sure that the hospital staff will roll-in the babies to moms staying in general ward or semi-private room (at HK Adventist). I just don't know if they do that anytime of the day or just during daytime. Anyway, there's no harm to check with Baptist, right?
Sorry I'm also not very sure but I believe you should be able to pump or express the colostrum out by hand. But once you can get out of bed, of course you should nurse your baby asap so that s/he can suck the nipples for stimulation.
