It was a nice evening watching music video with my son. He was so excited that he asked me for the baton and waved it like a conductor. His eyes were sparkling with delight. It was ..... plak.... It was broken!
He was so sorry. His face changed with the sound of cracking.
I did not want to blame him. It was me who gave him the "toy". The baton just cost not more than HK$50, but it did mean something to me.
I joined the conducting class some years ago conducted by Maestro Henry Shek. We were told to bring a baton even though we were going to learn a basic course. The way of conducting by Maestor Shek is so fasinating that I was deeply impressed and influenced, especially I had been singing in his choir for two years. My enthusiasm of music was highly encouraged by him.
I was being an unappropriate conductor in xxxx Church. They put me to be the "head" of the church choir. It was so stressed. With such little understanding of music minnistry, how could I be the one? The only support came from the choir members of the Hong Kong Chorus. We were all new and had the same interest in music.
Years went by. What am I doing now? I have quited being a member of the xxxx Church Choir. I am no more a conductor of them. What is the use of the baton? I am a new member of another Church Choir. Now, I am an appropriate singer. I have to remind myself not to run too fast away from the people. I sing because of God, not others.
This special baton remineded me of the past - happiness and stress of singing and complicated human relationship around me.
Time does not wait. Memories does not go away. The breaking of the baton forced me to forget a bit of it.......
