There are two types of vitamin A. The first type comes from animal foods such as meat, fish and dairy foods and is known as retinol. The other type of vitamin A comes from plant foods such as carrots and green vegetables and is known as carotene. Excessive intakes of the retinol form of vitamin A may harm your baby (EGVM 2003). For this reason, it is recommended that you avoid taking vitamin or fish liver oil supplements that contain more than the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), i.e. more than 750mcg/day of retinol. Many fish oil supplements are made from the body of the fish rather than the liver and are considered quite safe because they do not contain excessive amounts of retinol. They also supply omega 3 essential fatty acids which have been linked to a reduction in the risk of prematurity and improved brain and eye development in your baby (Hoffman et al 1993).<br />
