I shall go there during Chinese New Year with my 8-year-old and 6-year-old boys. I shall stay there for 3 days and plan to tour around Gold Coast, go to Movie World, see glomworm at the natural bridge and then maybe either Aussie Farm or Lamington National Park.
I have visited Gold Coast three times and stayed there about 7-9 days each time. From 2000-2004, Cathay Pacific offered some free & easy packages at around $8000 per person including 3 nights stay in a hotel. I recommend that you stay in a hotel somewhere near the Surfer's Paradise for a few days only and then rent a car to drive around afterwards.
In the first three days, you could visit the movie world and the sea world while staying in a hotel. I remember that they built a casino and a monorail in the Surfer's Paradise inrecent years. It is very relaxing to hang around in the city and there are a lot of energetic teenages.
You may cosnider staying in a farm for two days and in a motel for three days. You need to drive about 1.5 hours to reach a farm in the outskirt of Gold Coast. In the farm, you will take a dinner with the farm owner, touring arounf his farm, riding a horse for about 1 hour, milking the cows, trekking, have a ride on the 4 wheel drive car and having a picnic besides the river. My kids like the farm stay very much and they were reluctant to leave the horse back.
We also stayed in a motel somewhere near Coolangatta. The motel has a very small swimming pool and our kids had a lot of funs with the other kids. At night, I like to have dinner at those clubs along the seaside. These clubs are not expansive at all and they serve good Australian foods. I also enjoy the breeze, the twinkling stars and walking in the beaches.
I would definitely visit Gold Coast again if the A$ soften a bit. (Last time, the exchange rate was 4.5 - 5.5 and no GST).
I enjoy driving in Australia and most of the drivers are very polite. It was very easy to find our way to the farm. However, there was no mobile phone coverage near the farm. I remember we stop over at a shopping mall on the way to Cedar Glen and had a wonderful lunch (British Chicken pies).
The owner of Cedar Glen is very nice too. What a coincident, I met the auntie of my Australian colleague there who worked in the farm (because she recognised my company's T-shirt).
We also met some Gold Coast residents who invited us to her home for an afternoon tea on the day before we left Brisbane (because she left her videocam in the farm). My kids played with her son for two hours at her home. Also, a Dutch student worked in the farm visited us in HK after she completed her 6-months working holiday in Australia.
