Dear all moms and dads,

We got out PR visa and has made initial entry to Australia just in Dec. Our children (6,3 and 2-month) love the place so well. We got several concerns which we want to seek some advice. Hope you all can help.

1. My eldest daughter (6 yo) has developmental delays and is receiving Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy training in Hospitals in HK. She is perfectly well when she walk / play but looks clumsy and cannot play as good as children of same age. Are schools/hospitals providing these in Australia? Where can i queue her up for these trainings? seek help from Council / hospital/...?

2. My eldest is also suspected of dyslexia and attention deficit, are there any schools providing learning support for these children?

Thanks a lot.

Hi KT-mom,

I am also a new comer here (less than 1 year).
From what I have heard and experienced, the support here should be greater than in HK.
The GP (General Practictioner, or Family Doctor) here can refer you to experts in hospital. On-going Service can be provided free of charge and those specialists can work together with teachers in school to get a better results.

Thanks Josephine, do u have more details on that, like
what hospital offer the services?
do I need reports from HK to shorten the queueing time?
Is it all schools or only some public shools offer such support?

because we pop in one public school in Hornsby and we are told that schools do not offer such support and we have to pay for private PT and OT, but the school will be flexible to let our girl to leave at any time and day to meet the schedule.

I have to say, I used to think Aus schools provide more and better support for these children, so I am quite surprise to know that. Hope you and some parents can give me more advice.

Hi KT-mom,

I have to say that what I know is not much. Let's share my personal expereince.
I lived near Hurstville and I have a 4 years 8 months old boy. He will go to kindergarten end of this month.
My son has some behavioural problems here, not sure if he is gifted or hyperactive, or just need more time to settle down. I asked the pre-school if I can have any support. The teacher gave me the hotline of the regional hospital. I called in and the assesment team called me back just 2 days later. I am able to talk to a clincial pyschologist few days later and have the 1st appointment with her the week after in a nearby centre. Since then, I have been consutling the clincial pyschologist once a week (free of charge), and she is willing to talk to the school directly if there is any need after my son started school.

Josephine

I think such support are offered through your local Community Health Centre, which are run by the Department of Health so is free of charge.

You will need to talk to your local doctor to get a referral. You can also ask your doctor about the approximate waiting time private vs public before you make any decision. Fees for private specialists can be claimed on your Medicare card (get approx. 50% back depending on your level of need).

The reports and informations you have already from HK will help your doctor to write the referral letters, and will save the specialist time so they have an idea of what has been done so far.

Try to talk to you family doctor first. You can also try the local baby health centre.
Good luck.
