definitely. depends what working experience u have before. it would be ideal if you have worked for big 4 in hk or some other big US firms. if not then try out some local small or mid size cpa firm, u need some hands on experience in the field. dont expect too much in salary though..good luck.

sorry i am in nyc not sf. cant help u. but sf mom is right, u need to know GAAP. cuz local books is different than US books.

You can check out those job searching site (eg. www.monster.com, http://hotjobs.yahoo.com, stc.) for salary in different city and see how's the job market going in US.

i would suggest u at least take a couple of accounting courses in the community college to get to know the differences in the GAAP than those in HK.
if it's hard for u to find a job at the beginning, u could try the chinese-owned companies first. for those jobs, usually they have classifieds at the local chinese newspaper such as Sing Tao and World Journal. however, expect a big pay-cut from the chinese companies at the very beginning.

if u don't have a CPA or a local accounting degree and local accounting experince, maybe u can only do the AP or AR jobs or being an accounting clerk.

have u considered getting a masters degree when u landed? some programs are fast-track and u could finish in a year or 1 1/2.

my undergrad degree is accounting and i had worked as an accountant for a few years before changing to the field of software engineering. so i know a little abt the accounting field, but i have no ideas abt the current market rate of the accounting jobs. with the CPA license and big CPA firm experience, u can get a decent pay being a financial analyst or something.

did u get yr degree in the States? if not, u'll need to find out if u qualify to take the exam. also, it says Most states now require 150 semester hours of university education. i heard that now it requires masters degree in order to meet the 150 semester hours requirement. i also heard that the exam itself might be easier than before but other requirements are stricter.

regarding the work experience, it usually requires u to be supervised by a CPA.

most people take the CPA reivew courses (expensive) in order to help themselves to concentrate on the studies.

SY_mom, thanks for your information. I have an MBA from a US University but it marked "Hong Kong Program" on the certificate coz it is a distance learning course. Don't knwo if it recognize by the state board.... will check this out later... Thanks a lot.... :恭: :喜: :發: :財:

there is only one cpa examhttp://www.cpa-exam.org/ i borrowed my friend's becker(prep class) material and study myself and safe me alot of $. if u r gonna find a job in CA then u should get CA's license. it's important to find a cpa who is willing to sign u off for ur working experience. i am not sure if you could work in a cpa firm with 2 kids now,it;s really demanding ..

alisonli is right .... the jobs at cpa firms are quite demanding. esp. if u rely on them to get our audit hours/work experience to get yr license, they might try to take advantage of that. also u might expect a lower pay at the beginning and longer work hours + commute to clients' sites, etc.

most of my friends got their CPAs right after they graduated from college. once they got their licenses and got some experience from the CPA firms, they would work for corporate instead.

if u still have young kids, u might wanna think twice before going into this path.
