Epping Boys has a good reputation.
Both my nephews graduated there (a few years ago). Both my sons should go there too (in a few years time). There are buses from Epping Station (approx. 5 minutes by bus).
Another good school I know is Holy Cross College at Ryde. Friend's sons graduated from there a few years ago. The teachers and brothers there are great. Plenty of buses from West Ryde / Eastwood stations (approx. 10 to 20 minutes by bus).
Each religious school has a quota to accept children of different religion (that is what I heard anyway).
Not sure how big the quota is - worth calling the school and see if they can offer a place for your child (worse they can say is no).
Also, should make an appointment to see the school principal with copies of your child's reports/test results. This will increase your chance of getting in.
Not sure how Epping Boys works - for PR, I thought they have to accept if you are "in area".
Though I have heard that a child may not get into the top class.
ie.
Epping Boys is a public high school.
For each year, they have a class (or 2) for the top students. These gets filled fairly fast. The rest of the students in each year are seperated into the other classes.
So for someone who is starting half way through the school system - the school will do their best to place them into a class with similar abilities. Sometimes this doesn't happen due to class size and they have to place the child in the next best/suitable class.
There are some more good schools around:
Carlingford High School
Normanhurst Boys High School
They are not very far from Epping. Often if there are schools around, there are buses and school buses for kids. When I was in Year 11, I travelled all the way from Blacktown to Parramatta. Both my home and school were not close to the station. Thus, bus -> train -> bus ... :) Still doing okay.
