Just wondering if you have changed your lastname after you got married?

I felt a little weired when the school addressed us as Mr. & Ms. when I got the correspondence from one of the schools that we'd submitted application for our son's kindergarten.

I know it's a bit odd in the US if u haven't changed your lastname after u got married. However, I didn't change my lastname as I think there're lots of work to change the social security card, etc. Plus, all my college diplomas showed my maiden name, etc.

I didn't change it either. I found that kinda common for Chinese for not changing to their husband last name, but my American coworker think that's odd?!?!

I suppose it's common practice in the american society. I think most of my amerian female colleagues changed their last names after they got married. I know a colleague always carries two driver's licenses (for before and after name change) in her wallet in case she needs to prove that she has two names.

You may also get a statement from Social Security office to state that NameA aka NameB.

I have a paper from SS office (with their stamp on it) stated my 2 names. e.g. Siu-Ming Chan aka Peter Chan (other name used).

Regarding the change of last name, I did not and will not change my last name. 坐不改姓 :) Besides I dislike my husband's last name. The paperwork is one thing, the major thing is I do not like this idea. Many professional female in the US do not change their maiden name as well. You can always use some other security password for bank etc rather than using your mother's maiden name.

it's true that it's common to change the lastname to the husband's after u got married. however, i have a girlfriend who's a white american said she's not going to change her lastname when she got married. i also have coworkers who have their lastname as "own lastname" - (plus a dash) "husband's lastname" although it made it a long one. there was a coworker who had changed her lastname for so many times within a year (changed it back to her own lastname when divorced, then changed it to her new husband's lastname when she got married again).

as i'm so lazy, i guess most likely i'm not gonna change my lastname.

Recently, I am also considering this issue now. When I delivered Amanda, the nurse put Chan as her lastname and the doctors keep thinking that I'm Mrs Chan and called my husband Mr. Chan. In old days, when woman got married and she can request name change in City Hall (it shows in the marriage certificate afterwards). However, when I married 3 years ago, City Hall did not provide this service any more. If I need to have name change, I have to find an attorney to do it. Also, I need to change all the records in bank, IDs, etc. There're a lot of works. Since I'm going to apply for citizenship exam, there's a chance to change my name via this process. But, my brother told me that I can use the a.k.a method so that I can use my English nickname without going through all the works for name change.

In my workplace, most of the American workers change their lastname after marriage so do our Chinese friends who born here. But, I also see some co-workers keeping their maiden name. One of my co-workers always get into trouble regarding her name. She got her insurance license before she married and it shows her Chinese name with her maiden lastname. Now, she married and she would like to use her English nickname and her hubby's lastname. But, in between, she sometimes used her English nickname with her own maiden name and sometimes her English nickname with her hubby's lastname. It creates a lot of confusions and many parties keep complaining that they cannot find her.

For me, I'm still struggling. Since I have my maiden name in my college certificates, SS card, ID card, bank a/c, mileage a/c.... changing name means a lot of works. Also, I always need to prove that I have 2 names. I just wonder how the American women deal with these.

I read long article about people changing their last name DIY (not thru external legal service) for their kid (reason is because the Chinese name doesn't sound good or hard to pronounce in English etc). You may try to DIY the name change if you want to. I will see if I can find the link on the name-change story that I read before.

Hi all, I'm actually very confused with my case, would like to get some advice.

My immigrant visa and the permanent reisdent card are both in my name.

My husband would prefer me to change my last name and I actually do not mind doing it. However, I don't know how to change it since all my visa documents are all in the name that is consistant with my Hong Kong passport.

Because I won't get my US passport till 3, 4 years later, so I don't know whether I can change the last name now, or have to wait till I get my US passport.

P.S. I don't want to change my name on my Hong Kong passport and ID card.

I think if you are not in a hurry to change your last name, it may be easier for you to change your name when you apply for citizenship (and use it in your US passport) etc. It's more mah farn to have more names for the background check etc.
