Hi All,

I am planning to move to Melbourne with 2 children (3yo and 7yo) in 2015.

I would like to seek some advise/tips on
- what need to prepare before arrive in Melbourne eg job, house, school, medicare and what else
- what I need to/must bring from HK because these things I cannot get in Melbourne
- should or can I buy cheaper household furniture or electronic in Melbourne in order to save on the moving cost
- anything else I need to be aware of

Thanks in advance for the help

Cheers

my family also includes two kids with the same age of yours but we are moving to Melbourne in 2016.

I have not yet considered what I should prepare for the moving but better to have bank account(s) prior your leaving from hk.

I think you can get most easily of things in Melbourne unless those chinese foods. There is Ikea in Melbourne so you can shop around.

Where suburb will you settle?

We will go over Melbourne this coming Easter holiday. Hopefully can get something done before the move. We are looking around Glen Waverley or Doncaster area as there are many Chinese population.

What about you Frankhui? Are you familiar in Melbourne? Which area will you consider too?

If you are selling your house in HK, you may consider packing all your household stuff in a container (including your car!) and ship everything to Melbourne. Google some shipping companies in HK and get a few quotations to compare. The shipment may take a few months though.
You can compare the prices of different furnitures and household stuff by looking at the Australian Ikea site http://www.ikea.com/au/en/store/richmond/
You may also consider staying in a furnished accommodation first before you get something more permanent. Always send an email to ask for special rates for long stays (anything longer than 2-3 weeks)

For schools, if you are thinking of public schools, it doesn't matter that much with primary schools, but for high schools, you may want to live in the catchment zone of one of the following schools Camberwell High, Balwyn High, Box Hill High, Glen Waverley Secondary, Mount Waverley Secondary, McKinnon Secondary or University High in the city.

Did you have experience to move from HK to Melbourne too? Any idea what I should buy from HK for thing like rice cooker and etc.........
because these things I cannot get in Melbourne

I understand AUST very strict on what food to bring in. I seach on the govt websire but not very clear. Can I bring some chinese much have food like dry much, chinese herb, chinese tea leaf and etc.........

I have a look at the houses in the school catchment zone. There are unbelievable expensive even for a townhouses or units. Might have to think carefully :(
