Before you go to a shop to buy anything, at least you need to do a little bit of research for the product you want. You can never rely on a salesperson to tell you want you need.
For selection a DC, you may need to consider the following:
1. your budget, i think that's the 1st priority.
2. the size of the DC you want, people may want a ultra compact whereas other may not care about the size.
3. the functions you need, for example, whether you need a pure auto DC or you may need some manual control about the apperture/ shutter speed, ISO, etc.
4. the pixals you need, generally speaking, although there is lot of 5M, 6M or 8M DC in the market, i would suggest that 3M/4M DC is more than enough for just daily usage.
5. Others such as battary consumption, memory cards etc which is less important.
With the above in mind, you may already select only several models of DC. You may then go to some websites for some general comments from other users or test report.
