Dear Health Conscious Parents

I recently saw an article in ourlocal newspaper, www.thedaily.com.au, reporting that the Number of people die of Blood Cot Related Disease, e.g. Stroke (due to High Cholestrol Level) in Australia Every Year =

the TOTAL of people die of Breast Cancer + Bowel Cancer + All Traffic Accidents!!

I almost became one of them. My Life was at High Risk. And I spent a total of 4-month Fighting for My Life, trying my best to Lose Cholesterol and, Thank God, I made it!

Let's all go back to the Beginning.

After noticing there were two small spots on each corner of my eyes in last September, my nursing wife strongly suspected I had a Health Issue and therefore urged me to see a GP.

She was Right - I had a Problem, a Serious Problem. The GP arranged me for a Blood Test, confirming I had a Very High Level of Cholestrol - 6.4! (Should be at or below 5.4)

The GP could have put me on Medicine right away, but he kindly gave me 2-month time to reduce my Cholestrol Level.

Worrying my two Young Boys become Orphans, I immediately changed my Eating Habit :-

- Dropped the Bacons, Sausages, Eggs, Chicken Skins, Belly Pork etc;

- NO More Chocolate & Ice Cream;

- Changed Full Cream Milk to NO Fat, NO Cholestrol Milk;and

- Have One More Fruit (i.e. Two altogether) a Day.

Two months later, I returnd to see my GP and the Blood Test showing my Cholestrol Level dropped by 10% to 5.9!

But the GP stated it was still High and I had to try harder, and I was given another 2-month time.

And this time, I was Very Worried, because something was scheduled to happen for the coming two months that could make me Harder to stick to my Strict Diet.

Does any parent would like to guess what event was to happen?

Cheers
Fate

Hi Fate,

I think I could try to answer this one.

The event was for your family to return to Hong Kong for a summer holiday?

A Magical Food

Well Done, ngmammy!

You're Absolutely Right - We had to be in HK for two months between late Nov and late Jan.

It had been Very Very Difficult during that two months, with all these friends, relatives, ex-colleagues etc. in HK, inviting you out for meals, and all these very tempting crispy duck, roasted belly pork, spring onions and ginger chicken etc. "Jumping Around" in front of your Hungry Tummy!!

To make things Worse,

I had to have another Blood Test two weeks after HK holiday when returning Australia.

And Thank God, I read an article in a HK newspaper, reporting there is a research done in Sweden, confirming that if a person eats 30 gm of a particular food Every Day for THREE CONSECUTIVE WEEKS, their Cholestrol Level will be Reduced by 10%.

Does any parent would like to guess what that particular food is?

Cheers

Good Try

Hi Carol

Trust that your two lovely boys are enjoying themselves well.

Good Try - but that's NOT what I had in mind at the time.

(Oat is something also very healthy)

Want another try, Carol?

Or another parent would like to have a go?

Cheers

Not oat? Well.. will it be Chinese mushroom? The older generation believe in this (reducing cholesterol) and also cancer healing.

"One Leg" Food

Hi Harris_ma

Trust that you're very excited to soon arrive in Australia.

For some, "acking" could also be "Heart Breaking"!!

Good Try.

Mushroom, including Chinese one, is a Very Healthy Food - it is known to be Effective in Reducing One's Blood Pressure and Chances of having Cancers!

My wife recently reminded me of our Chinese Healthy Eating Tips :

When Young, Eat those with Four Feet - like Cow, Pig etc. ;

When Mature, Eat those with Two Feet - like Hen, Duck etc.; and

When Old, Eat those with "One Feet" - like Mushroom etc.

But Sorry, it is NOT Chinese Mushroom.

Want another try before leaving HK?

Or another parent would like to have a go?

Cheers

Make Life Easier

Hi Carol

Life itself is indeed very Hard.

I therefore can not agree with you more that ,

Health is the Most important thing in Life,

though many people realise this ONLY when they've lost it.

I once heard, Money can Buy you :-

The Most Delicious Food but NOT Appetite;
The Most Comfortable Bed but NOT Sleep; and
The Most Efficient Medicine but NOT Healthy.

To make Life easier for you (and other parents), let me give you a Hint :

This particular food is also Rich in Vitamin C.

Ready for another try?

Cheers

Sorry, it's NOT Orange, but You're on the Right Track.

This food is also good in Juice and makes a Yummy Dish when Cooked with meat!

Getting Closer

Hi Pro-Jamie

Celery is indeed a Very Good Guess.

It is a Very Healthy Food, and amongst other things, Lowering our Blood Pressure.

But, sorry, it's NOT "The Food".

"The Food", like Celery, is a vegetable, can be eaten as raw as a salad, and its Colour is highlighted in the movie named,

"The Woman in ?" (? is the Colour)

Once the Colour is Identified, the Anwser will become "A Piece of Cake" - Ops...., High Cholesterol!

Hi Slim Fate,

Do you know the headline of newspaper yesterday?

Hong Kong has been hit by a double food scare after New Zealand banned exports of tomatoes and the United States announced an outbreak of salmonella linked to the fruit.

City supermarkets have pulled New Zealand tomatoes off their shelves because of the discovery of a new disease- causing bacteria in the country.

Besides, eating grapefruit also causes high risk of breast cancer. I think a balanced diet is more appropiate because we never know which food is the best for our bodies.

Have a happy dragon-boat festival day!

Best regards,
chingyu

Three Questions

Hi Big (Love) Mother Chinyu

Nice to see you around and trust that your Little Girl has been Happy as ever.

You're right. I did not check yesterday's newspapre (www.on.cc, www.singtao.com or www.singpao.com) because I was extremely busy in :-

- Considering my elder boy teacher's invitation to organise a Chinese Writing Class for the Year 4 Students, after my boy had presented some Chinese Writing on Thursday and his 19 classmates loved it. (Every student has to present a talk in front of the whole class once every two weeks);

- Also Considering teaching all 20 students to each perform a Chinese Marial Art (e.g. 5 Animals, 4 Emotions, 3 Weapons and 2 Surprises etc.) for their Term 3 Perfomance with the Theme "A Touch of China" in welcoming the Summer Beijing Olympic (Each term, each class has to do a performance for their parents);

- Enjoying swimming with my boys in our heated pool, helping them to fight off their Suspected Asthma & Ezcema; and above all

- Comforting my neighbour as his 60-year-old(?) retired wife has been admitted into ICU for a week after suffering Acute Muscles Mulfunctioning due to,

yes, High Cholestrol!!! (More details later on)

So, I did NOT have the luxury to read HK newspaper yesterday as I normally do.

Before responding to the points you've raised, would you be kind enough to answer Three Questions.

Ready?

First,

(To you) What EXACTLY is a "Balanced Diet"?

Please define for the sake of Every Health Conscious Parent.

Cheers
Fate

Answer to 1st Question

Dear All Trying Their Best to Stay Healthy Parents
(For some could be Trying to Stay Alive!)

The reason that I've asked chingyu Three Questions is :

Ensure you lot have a Better Understanding of my Points.

The First Question,

"What Exactly is a Balanced Diet?"

Over the years, we often heard the following answers to the following questions :-

Q1 : How are we going to encourage Teenagers NOT to Smoke/to Exercise More/to Care Others More etc.?

A1 : To Educate them.

(The Problem is : HOW to do it?

How do we get the Teenagers come to listen in the first place?

How do we ensure they will stay attentive during the Whole presentation?

How do we...................................etc,etc.?)

Q2 : If we are worried about our Health, what should we do?

A2 : Talk to your GP.

(But the Reality is some GPs may say,

"It is too early to make any conclusion now. Just come back when you've a serious problem."

But when you indeed have a serious problem, some GPs may say,

"Why did you NOT come early, the problem is TOO Big now!")

The above is NOT a joke, it DID happen!

So, the term "A Balanced Diet , I'm sorry to say, may be Too Vague and is NOT good enough in Itself for those now Fighting for their Life (like I was) - they have ONLY Limited Time to put thing Right. - their Life is on the line.

Next time, I am to answer the 2nd Question I was meant to put to chingyu.

Cheers

Appreciate

Hi chingyu

I think many parents, like me, Appreciate you raising the point of "Balanced Diet".

You've made me realised of the need to bring up Three Points AND explain them in details.

Yours is obviously Common Sense NOT Nonsense.

But it's just that "Balanced Diet" takes time to work, and there are many High Cholesterol Sufferers just do NOT have the Luxury of Time.
