First of all, you have to consider where do you want to prevent your baby to enter, e.g. gates for kitchen or open area is very different.
Say you want to put a gate at the kitchen door, most models would need you to screw them on the door frame and they are sturdier. Other models have alternative mechanisms and would be gentler to your door frame, but when your baby get older, he/she may shake the gate out of place.

I bought 0/3 baby painted metal gate for under $279 during Jusco sale. quite good.
But remember to measure width of door frame. Mine is just fit.I told the reno guy not to make the door frame wider than 30 inches. He made it 31 inches! Luckily, I already told him a smaller figure cause there is bound to be mistakes in renovation. 1 inch more, then it won't fit.
