Hi Korg,
Like Carrie210 said, NYC has pretty good programs for kids with special needs.
If your son is before age 3, he can enroll to EI program. The programs offers ABA training, the therapist is trained to correct kids who got diagnosis with 自閉症. Between age 3 and 5, CPSE program is available. Some of CPSE schools also provide ABA training.
If your son is young and he gets treated early, he has a high chance to outgrow 自閉症 symptons.
Also, for Autism, kids always have special Talent, once they out growth of Autism by those special training, you should also send your child to have the Gifted and Talanted Test, it is free in NYC, for kids from 4yrs old to Grade 3.
My daughter is borderline of ADHD and her OLSAT score is 99%, now, she gets into the Gifted school (Public school) with the special training. We glad that we finally found a school, knows how to take care kids with special needs.
Although, it is far from home (30min driving), but it sure worths!

我仔仔2歲半, 剛search過 early intervention programe, san francisco 都有. 想問吓會唔會好似香港咁, 要排好耐呢? 香港要等大約一年, 到時呀仔都3歲半了. 所以而家咩都係私人的, 好貴.
呀仔智能上都顯得唔差, 但太自我, 成日尋迷係自己世界, 又唔識溝通, 但記憶力好好, he can read over 300 words. but all english.
Korg,
sure.. it doesn't matter you are resident or citizen at all.. here in NYC, you don't need to wait, if they did the evaluation on your child, and your child need to have the service.
But, during the period of approval, certainly takes some time
I'd posted a message to the another topic that you'd raised the question earlier.
actually yr son's case sounds like my friend's son in HK. he was diagnosed to be autistic when he was 3. however, his IQ is ok and especially good in math, but a bit slow in language than an average same-age kid and didn't like to play with other kids. his english is also better than chinese in reading and writing. however, when he's getting older, his language is also catching up gradually and he is doing ok at a regular elementary schoool and started to have a couple of closed friends to play with.
so, probably u don't need to worry too much ...
by the way, i'm not familiar with the S.F. school district but you can check out their home page and try to find out the info that u need:
Korg,
In the meantime, you may want to introduce pretend play / imagination play to your son, so he is not that 自我. Also, if he likes to spin (ex. spinning wheels, spinning in circle), you should break that habit. Let him watch Barney movies, it teaches the kids to share and use their imgaination. Hope it helps.
