Any good companies recommend?
I asked for quote with 4 companies: Baltrans, Prudential, Asian Tigers, Crown.
They all offered shipment to Brisbane in 4 weeks'time. Prices were +/- HK$10000.
I chose one of them, because a friend recommended to me, but it turned out a little bit disappointing. Just a small problem, they left all the screws for my double bed in HK. When we called them, they asked us to buy some screws and assemble the bed ourselves. Or we could wait for didn't know how long for their representatives to come and inspect. Of course, we didn't wait for them, where were we supposed to sleep?
I heard from BK, another family got bad experience from another company with good word of mouth.
Hello everybody, just wonder if Aus customs will impose any tax on the stuff you packed and shipped from Hongkong?? Or any allowance for a new migrant? Any info is grateful. Cheers.
There is tax allowance for each person. Don't know the latest $$ but you should able to get the information from the company you choose.

I think so but only have one person allowance. You should have the custom form given by the mover company to mark all the value of new items.
Only new items to count tax.

Thanks so much Ngtft. Its only my wife as a migrant on a spouse visa. Can we still ship stuff to Australia and be qualified for some tax allowance?
if it is the 1st time you settle as a PR, you will still have the migrant allowance (I got my PR in 2005 but I only settle in aust in 2009 with my wife (she get her spouse visa in 2009) and the customs did not charge us any tax/duty on our container).
there is no specific amount on the concession. if the goods (furniture / elec appliances, etc) had been used for more than 12 mths, they will be tax free. You will have to complete a declaration form when shipping your household items and new goods may attract tax / duty and you may have to provide invoice to proof the value.
Thanks Ngtft and Joe. My wife got her visa validated (ie first landing) last year. Will she still be eligible? How do the customs ppl decide if the stuffs you shipped are new or used? If you show the goods receipts which was dated within 12 months, I presume that would be seen as "new". If so do they convert the HK price to Aus$ for tax purpose or based on their estimated aus prices? What if the receipts (for used stuff) are lost? Any idea on the tax rate?? Sorry so many questions....
if u haven't stay in aust for a long term period, i think both of u should be entitled to the new migrant concession.
to determine whether it is new goods or not, you will have to declare in the import declaration form (bear in mind it's a lega doc), if you declare there are new items, some may attract customs duty (but u have to check the rates) and all will be liable for GST, which is 10%.
Thanks Joe for the reply. So the customs offcer will charge 10% GST on the new items based on the HK prices shown on the receipts, not as guestimated Aus prices? Well, if so, thats pretty acceptable. : )
Well...it depends... If you use one whole container, you can control the time and the whole process takes around 4-5 weeks depends on the time of quarantine inspection and customs clearance.
If you cannot use one whole container, you need to share with others and thus have to wait. The normal time is around 45 to 50 working days.
This is the case of mine and my friend.
