My Thai maid is only 18 years old and this is her first job. She just come here last week. First night with us, we bought a box of chicken rice for her. She only ate 1 pc of chicken and 4 mouthful of rice and then threw it away. The following 2 days she ate very very little. Only one pc of bread with jam in the morning. Maybe half bowl of rice with vegetable sauce (don't take any vegetable) and 2 mouthful of meat for lunch and only 2 mouthful of noodles at night. But after 2 days, she started to have 4 pcs of bread with jam for breakfast. My colleagues advise me to buy a cheaper jam for her, so I bought the "No Frill" brand, however, after she tried once, she refused to take it anymore and she took my more expense jam from fridge for her breakfast now. For lunch, she can eat 2 big bowls of fried rice or whatever she feels it's tastful.
Also, her Cantonese and English are very limited and we feel really hard to communicate with her. Even I demonstrate once to her and ask to do it immediately, she can do it completely wrong. My friends told me that their Thai maids can easily pick up Cantonese and work very well and I think they cook similar with the Chinese dishes but now it's a mess. When I tried to ask some other Thai people (who can speak Cantonese) to communicate with her, she told them she understand everything and can speak Cantonese fluently. I feel besides lack of experience, she's also absent minded and very 粗心大意. and not initiative and lack of common sense e.g. after she took the plates from the cabinet for us, she just leave the doors of the cabinet open and go to do other things, she will put the very hot soup to the fridge, she only mop the floor once every day and after that even there is any dirt on the floor, she won't clean it initiatively.etc.
Normally how long do I need to train her or does her personality is unable to change??
you need to train her. I agree that all maids are the same and housework is such an endless 'mission'. So first of all, like all maids you need to set rules for her including her personal things, such as when to wake up, what type of food she will take or should not take, when she take bath, when she wake up and go to bed etc etc. Also, for housework, set her schedule, run thro with her after you return home if you are not all the time at home etc etc.
One thing I nearly forgot, all maids are the same is that they are good pretender, pretend they dont know, pretend they dont understand, say they forget things etc. Some unpatient employer such as ours will do it ourselves rather than telling them again. If it is the case, then you fall into their trap, all they want is to sit there and earn their 3270 every month, everything provided. After so many years, I learn. For new maids, if they dont know I will stay by her side watching and supervising how she do it and correct her at once. Afterwards, I will tell her to repeat what she has to do, cannot talk fluently no problem, do it again (not repeat in words again) at once before me so that she will remember. Then ask her to write on a piece of paper what she has to do and if she continues not to do them well next time, ask her to take out her small written piece of paper and 'bing' her. Given time, they know you are serious and are not c9 (sorry I use this description) and will do. Nearly 100% work. Of course, when they are here longer and if they make some bad friends, they will gradually not doing to your likings. Subject to your tolerance level, you may either fire them (if you cannot tolerate them anymore) or not renewing their contract.
Thank you very much for your advice. Actually I did set the work schedule for her and she has written it down in Thai, however, seems that she never follow it strictly. As I need to work and don't have much time to supervise her, so my mother is the one in house to supervise and sometime she's also fed up. Just like when my mother asked her not to cook the peas and wait for she to domonstrate. However after my mom came out from bathroom, the maid already cooked the dish. I know it's because the maid doesn't fully understand our language. Anyway, now the situation is a little bit better. Seems that she starts to know better some of our requirements and cleaning standards.
