can同able to 意思大致係一樣, 但用法不同!

我問咗老公(佢係英國人),佢話:

Both have very similar meanings however traditionally we use can in a sentence where we are asking someone to go and do something now:
e.g. Can you get me a drink please?
Whereas we should use able to when asking a general question about someones abilities:
e.g. Are you able to paint a lion?
Unfortunatly now the difference is blurred because english speaking people are prone to use can when they should use able to. This development of usage has occured in the last sixty odd years as older authors demonstrate a more specific usage of both can and able. It is most likely to have happened because of the need for further sentences to request that someone performs said action after you have accertained wether they are able to do something or not:
e.g. Are you able to paint a lion?
Yes.
Can you paint a picture of one for me?
As you can see it is easier to just presume the request from the first question.

咁大致上既意思係咪 can就係能夠/可以做...; able to 即係'被准許/容許去做....'咁解? 唔知我有無解錯呢?

The Gerund Phrase
A gerund phrase will begin with a gerund(動名詞), an ing word, and might include other modifiers(修飾詞) and/or objects(賓語). Gerund phrases always function as nouns(名詞), so they will be subjects, subject complements, or objects in the sentence. Read these examples:

- Eating ice cream on a windy day can be a messy experience if you have long, untamed hair.


The Adverb Pharse
The adverb phrase in English is nearly identical to the adjective phrase, with only the expected changes in form. In the adverb phrase, an adverb functions as head. see diagram



An adjectival phrase or adjective phrase (AP) is a phrase with an adjective as its head. Adjectival phrases may occur as pre- or postmodifiers to a noun, or as predicatives (predicate adjectives) to a verb (e.g. full in the bottle is full).

can 和 able to

can用來表示某事可能或被允許, 某人有能力做某事
彩用can + 不定式 (can do/ can see)的形式

- we can see the lake from our bedroom window.
- can you speak any foreign languages?
- i can come and see you romorrow if you like

否定式是can't

你可以說某人is able to do something, 但can更常用
但can只有兩種形式 can (現在式) 和 could (過去式)
所以時常有必要使用 (be) able to

比較 -
- I can't sleep
- I haven't been able to sleep recently

- Tom can come tomorrow
- Tome might be able to come tomorrow

- Maria can speak French, Spanish and English
- Applications for the job, must be able to speak two foreign languages

有時候用be able to來替代can 和 could表示能力, 但在下列情況下不能用 be able to

- CDs can now be copied easily
- Can you cook
