If your baby is ready, you can introduce rice cereal or congee. How do you know if he's ready or not? If your baby can sit up with support and is able to be fed from a spoon and knows how to swallow thicker food, he's ready. Rice cereal is better than congee as a lot more nutrition has been added while congee is merely carbonhydrates. At the beginning, you should thin down the rice cereal with a lot of milk or water (depends on the type of rice cereal). If baby takes it with no problem, you can start thicken it up little by little.
Honestly speaking, baby gets all his nutrition from milk at the first 6 months. There's no hurry to give him solid food before that if it's not necessary. My kids' doctor asked me to hold it up until they turned 6 months old before giving any solid food other than milk.
