My friend bought one for gift exchange many years ago. When I worked in my first company and we have Christmas gifts exchange game, a lot of my coworkers were so creative. Here are some: -
1) 2 big bags of rice, yes! BIG one, not small! The one who got them cursed at the buyer.
2) A $50 note (we made a rule of $50)
3) 2 golden fishes in a pond, wrapped in a box and fancy paper, he put a note "THIS WAY UP, NO UPSIDE DOWN" on the wrapping paper
4) Change of 1 cents with $50 worth value in a glass
5) Pens and pencils, several dozens
6) A small rice cookers (some coworkers bought lunchboxes)
7) A waffle maker
Since the gift is bought on behalf of your boss, I think that it should be something decent such as a MP3 player/iPod, a nice branded wallet/card holder, a crystal decor (says Tiffany), a coupon to good restaurant, etc.
