i underwent the amniocentesis about a year ago because my blood test showed very high level of a protein called AFP. the genetic counselor told me there's a 13 to 25% chance foe my child to be born with a birth defect.

luckily the dr who performed the procedure for me is very experienced, the first explained to me and my husband what she's gonna do, and the risk about the procedure, and answered all our questions and concerns.

then she looked at our baby on the ultrasound machine, very carefully, from head to toe. and she explained each part of the body to us. she said that if there's a birth defect such as brain or spinal cord abnormality, very often we can see it from the ultrasound. she also checked the position of the baby so she would know where to insert the needle for the amniocentesis.

lastly was the actual procedure to insert the needle. it was a very long and thin needle to be inserted into my tummy. i was very afraid and stressed at that time, even my husband was right next to me and holding my hands. one of the nurses saw how tense i was and she started massaging my feet and that made me feel a lot better. the procedure was very fast, i heard a "pop" sound and that's about it. it didn't hurt at all (blood draw hurts more).

the doctor should give you some aftercare instructions such as don't do vigorous exercise for a few days and it's normal to see a little bit spotting.

in my opinion, the procedure is not frightening but it's the fear of losing the baby that makes the experience so awful. it takes 2 weeks to get the result, you can start a project such as organizing a closet or create a scrapebook to distract yourself so you won't be thinking of it all the time.

i hope your procedure will go smoothly and wish you a very healthy baby

I did it over 2 years ago when I had placenta abruption and I was 3-4mm diluted. The doctor said that she needed to do an amnio to see if my baby's lungs were developed before she would induce labor.
The needle was very long and thin. I had 3 doctors in the room to do this for me, 1 senior to supervisor, 1 actually did the amnio and 1 watched the u/s. The 3 discussed how to do and where to stuck the needle in and what degree of the needle should go. It did not take too long and it's not that scary. I and my husband do not scare of needle or blood and we just worried about the test result. Luckily, the analysis came in 2 hours and finally the doctor induced labor.
But, there's also a risk on amniocentesis. My sister in law leaked water afterwards and finally needed to go for bedrest for 6 weeks. Of course, it may not be due to amnio and everybody's different.
