which the US government conceded
MMR vaccine德國麻疹疫苗 causes Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) 急性播散性腦脊髓炎 which causes Pervasive Developmental Delay, or PDD [an autism spectrum disorder]自閉症 in Bank Bailey's case
Thank you so much for raising this to our concern, Singwin!
I originally booked vaccination for my son this coming Wed. I have heard about there are suspicions that MMR vaccine is linked to Autism. But I have never really looked into it until you reminded me of this.
I am reading this book by Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohm: "How to Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor". It mentioned that the reason why pediatricians insist parents should bring their children regularly for vaccinations is totally because of the money making opportunity. Diseases like Measles and mumps, can be easily cured with no life threatening concerns (both included in the MMR vaccines).
I honestly don't know what to do. I probably will cancel the appointment first because I want to make a decision that is in best interest of my son.
**Singwin, will you bring your son in for the MMR shot?
And if other mommies have more information about this, please kindly share with us. Thank you!
Thanks for you reply. I really don't know what to do and that's why I post the issue here for dicussion. I just want to gather as much information as possible before making the decision. One question I want to the answer is what's the outcome if my son doesn't take MMR. is it a requirement for entering school?
On one hand common sense tells me that there so many people who've taken the shot (includeing you and me) and are ok, but on the other there are a few stories(very few I guess) in which the BB regressed into autistic behaviour(lost of eye contact and speech) soon after taking the shot. The doctor will most likely tells me they are not related. I personally know two parent whose sons have little problems with attention span and eye contact. The problems are not searious enough to be regarded as autism or ADHD. Everyone knows the problems are more common in boys than in girls but nobody knows why. Is it related to the age they take MMR (1 year old) at which the brain of a girl is more developed than a boy? Please feel free to share
I have talked to my husband about this (who is informed with this issue from podcasts and online research), after weighing the risks and benefits, we probably will let our son take the shot.
The reason is, my husband once heard a podcast where a mom mentioned Measles is in fact is one of the most horrible sickness that she came across with. (I will see if I can find you the link for this) And not to mention, with Meningitis it can be deadly.
No doubt, I feel torn between the 2 choices as well. But the truth is, no matter what decision I made, if something really does happen, either way I will feel like I am a bad mother.
Autism definitely is a horrible horrible thing. Then again, it might be able to cure with time. However, with the other diseases, if actions are not taken quick enough, it might cost the life of my little boy.
Finally to answer your question regarding if MMR vaccines are mandatory in order to be admitted. I honestly am not sure about it. But I did hear that for SOME schools, that is the case.
Anyways, sorry for posting such a long message. Do let me know what your decision is as well :)
I've consulted my pediatrian about this issue and this is the answer I get: "Medical studies failed to confirm any linkage between MMR & autism." And for me, my daughter had the shot 1.5 years ago and so far so good, and I will let my son to have the shot next week.
Thanks for the information!
I have brought my son in for vaccination today. He had 2 shots. So far he is doing alright with no fever. But as MMR will generally react after 5 - 10 days so I can just keep an eye on him.
Dunno if he can make it to the 0803 birthday party?!? I guess we'll see.
