I have many Hi-8 (PAL) and DV (NTSC) tapes and would like to be backup by DVDs (Somedays, Hi-8 will be totally disappeared!! and would like to convert them to DVD asap)
I planned to buy a DVD recorder to do so. Questions:
1. I would like to buy PAL/NTSC multi system DVD recorder, should I buy Panasonic or Philips? Any other recommendation.
2. Should I buy DVD + or - or others?
3. Should I buy DVD +/-RW install to the computer to do the copying instead? I know this is the cheapest way, but may be time consuming.
1. Both Panasonic and Philips make excellent but expensive DVD recorders. Panasonic even supports the superior DVD-RAM format.
2. Should get one that supports both + and -.
3. You're right that it's very time consuming. Unless you want to do video editing, 1. is the way to go especially you've got many tapes to backup.
If I buy the +/- model, should I copy them in + or -?
These are backup with an objective to keep longer, in case of technology change in future convert than I may need to convert again. i.e. when DVD fade-out.
Sony Hi-8 camcorder does not have an IEEE1394. The video quality may lose if the Hi-8 is recorded via the composite input. However, a Hi-8 tape can be play in a Sony D8 camcorder, which have an IEEE1394 interface.

I don't have Sony D8 camcorder, do you know any shops in HK/Kowloon/NT (wherever is O.K. for me) provide services for using D8 to backup Hi8 tapes to DVD?
