THOUSANDS of babies' dummies have failed safety tests and are expected to be recalled nationally today.
The NSW Government said the safety shields on almost 20,000 Baby Joy Orthodontic Pacifiers Soft Natural Latex distributed across Australia since January 2007 were too small and posed a serious choking hazard for babies. A further 4500 Baby Pacifier dummies distributed between June 2004 and December 2006 were defective, with the teat and ring easily separated during testing.
No children have been injured by the dummies, which were made in China and Taiwan and have been sold widely through discount variety stores across the country.
The NSW Fair Trading Minister, Virginia Judge, said the dummies posed a serious health risk to babies, and Fair Trading officers would be targeting pharmacies and department stores and well as discount outlets next week to ensure all dummies on sale in the state met mandatory safety standards.
"Every parent in NSW should feel completely confident they are purchasing a baby dummy that is safe for their child to use," Ms Judge said.
