i'm not living in santa clara but i know a bit about it.
which part of santa clara are u gonna move to?
unless you're very closed to the SJ airport, otherwise, it shouldn't be too noisy.
i think santa clara is a good neighborhood and affordable place to live but most public schools there are so-so except for a few good ones. part of the zip code 95051 is in the cupertino school district and the Eisenhower elementary is good although it's not the top one. otherwise, in the santa clara school district, only the Laurelwood elementary is good but u can apply for the lottery school (Milikin elementary has very high API score as 90% of students are Asians).
about grocery shopping, i know there are a couple of Korean supermarkets in santa clara as there are quite some Koreans there. also, quite some Indians live in the apartments in santa clara as most of them are immigranted engineers.
it should be a safe neighborhood, but i'm not sure about the part closed to El Camino Real.
Thanks for your reply, you know quite a lot!
Actually, we haven't figured out where should we live in Santa Clara yet, and also we are thinking about living in Mountain View or Redwood City, etc......
Talking about School, I know Milikin Elementary
is a great one, also Laurelwood Elementary is the second good one....

yeah, but personally i like Eisenhower elementary better after i'd visited it couple years ago. the student population is a little more diversified than Milikin, and the teachers and staffs at Eisenhower seems to be nice. also, it's not guranteed that u can get into Milikin even if u live in the santa clara school district as the enrollment is by lottery. i lot of people (esp. indians and chinese) who live in the santa clara district wish to get into Milikin; otherwise, they just send their kids to the private schools instead as there are lots of private schools around that area. most of them are not too big and not too expensive compared to others.
u can try to look for the houses in the cupertino school district in santa clara (part of the zip code 95051 - neighborhood school is Eisenhower) to compare. of couse, it's more expensive than the santa clara school district but still cheaper than the other cupertino school districts.
btw, public schools in redwood city are bad.
as for mtn. view, Springer elementary (in los altos school district, more expensive) is the best and next good one is Huff elementary. Bubb is ok; others are bad.
I used to work at Santa Clara and Redwood City and lived in Sunnyvale & Mountain View. I don't think it's noisy in Santa Clara unless you live really close by the airport. My son used to go to a Chinese family daycare in Santa Clara and the lady's house is decent (close to Lawrence/El Camino Real) and her neighbors are nice (mostly Caucasian who have lived there for decades).
It's quite convenient to buy Chinese/Asian food and other stuffs in these area. There are 99 Ranch Market in Milpitas & Cupertino etc and Marina Market in Cupertino. There's a Chinese grocery store (similar to Ranch but smaller) called New Wing Yuen in Santa Clara (Lawrence/Tasman). Even downtown Mountain View (Castro Street) has a small Chinese supermarket. It's pretty convenient here. I often shop at the Korean grocery stores (Santa Clara & Sunnyvale) and the Trader Joe's in Sunnyvale & Mountain View. There are Whole Food in Los Altos (close to Mountain View), Palo Alto, and Cupertino. There are Wal-mart and Target in Mountain View as well. (Walmart in Milpitas too and Target is around in every cities...) You can find a lot of Chinese/Asian restaurants in Cupertino Village and Milpitas Square.
Public schools have high API scores in Cupertino & Palo Alto etc and you may refer to Sy_mom's comment as she is more expert in this area. :) My son will be in preschool this Fall and we don't know if he will go to public elementary school or not yet. We will see...
HI SY_Mom bunnymonkey,
thank you for your info, My hubby and I drove down to Santa Clara with our 2 girls 實地視察 this morning. We were checking out some houses, schools & neighborhoods: Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Cupertino as well......what a long day! We all so tired. We even talked to some locals to find out more info in a restaurant when we were having lunch. So far, we like Los Altos, Cupertino better than Santa Clara....anyway, it will be a big change for us, we have to think it more carefully before we make any decision...I feel so bad for my older daughter since she just started school here and we have already made a lot of good friends...
