Some of the maid not borrowing just a few thousand for urgent use. Mine borrow $15000 in her second month in Hong kong, which is the maximum for the loan. I told her not to borrow money from the financial company the 1st day in Hong Kong.
For some case even borrow more than $20000.
If we are living in Hong Kong and we are Hong Kong resident, we usually borrow monies in different forms, e.g. credit card, housing loan or even personal loan for taxation.
I don't agree that we should think that it is normal or even compare the situation with us. If we are working in overseas, will you think of borrowing money from the finanial company there. I think we will go to borrow in the last resort, that means very important and very urgent and a must.
For Hong Kong is not their home country, they are just working for their family. They should have a good managment of their financial situation. They are earning for living here, not earning for repaying very very high interest loan. So, as a employer, we should not encourage them to borrow and we should not think it is a usual case.
I do believe that most of the domestic helpers in Hong Kong have borrowed money from financial institutions.
Even direct hire from Overseas, they'll soon borrow after they settle down here. As long as they repay their loans and don't cause trouble to me, I have no choice but "accept" that.
