How lucky you are! I found that I didn't understand what my domestic helper said on her first day in HK!
Frankly, her English is still poor now. There's nothing you can do, but when time goes by you'll get used to her very heavy accent. Just be careful with your kid because she will speak like your domestic helper soon! The only thing you can do is to teach your kid (and your domestic helper) the correct pronunciation when you notice any mistakes.
It's not a good idea to let your domestic helper learn Cantonese. It is much more difficult than learning English. Good luck!
My Philipino helper's English is just average...and she can speak some simple Cantonese. Not that difficult for them to learn Cantonese. Time can make a difference.
mine is the same.
the agent claimed that she speaks "GOOD" english on her resume.
then, the 1st day had disappointed me already!! we don't understand each other even until now..
the agent just said, yes, their accent are different. it takes some time for both of us...
i can't accept indeed. i don't want my child to speak like her.
simple word like: take bath, salt, pepper, vegetable, etc. that's unbelievable. how can she say she know english?
so, i use black & white at last, almost every night i leave a note for her, that's how we communicate to avoid misunderstand.
Same as me,u worry about this but your maid will not.I think u better to call her or u to write down what u want on the paper. and then u call her to read one time.It will be better. My maid came to HK 8 months ,U know ,I really angry with her before. Why ?? She said to me " Mum your pronuciation is not the same.I ask myself ... My boss are Indian & they understand what i said.U said to me like this.Is it funny ? I tried to ask her : ship & cheap - how to read & she read this 2...are the same.U try to ask your maid,is it the same.Ha ha....
yep, like one day she told me "no paper in kitchen",
i said have a new one in your room. she said no,
i said what?
she said "paper".
i said i really didn't understand.
then she asked me to get inside the kitchen & showed me the "pepper"...
i treat it as a joke, or i'll die, ha
& i don't even want her to read the book with my babies....
poor me, i didn't call her before i hire her, coz i trust the so called "agent", that's introducing by my sister. that's my fault.
& right, they still think they're correct.
but everyday i play music for my baby, i think she should realize that who is correct.
but i don't think she'll change coz we seldom talk.
