My maid told me 2 days ago his father was seriously ill and being put in the intensive care unit for observation. Her sister from Switzerland will go back to Philipinnes and by next Wed, she will know if she needs to go back to see the last face of his father, etc.
She's been with us for only one year. Few weeks ago I told her that I am pregnant again (the 3rd time) and the delivery date would be sometime in May..................... What a coincidence, we should pay her the salary on this coming Tue. We couldn't but keep thinking that she might just use this excuse to quit our family and not coming back. (In our mind, she is always smart in working less and making excuses.)
What can I do now? If she claims her father is dying, I must let her go. But this is not fair if she just gets her salary and sneak away while we are waiting for her!!!
I can't possibly keep her salary and wait for her to come back, right?
Did you hire her thru an agent, if so talk to the agent about your concern.
If you hire her direct and do not trust her better tell her what's in your mind:
e.g. "We couldn't but keep thinking that she might just use this excuse to quit our family and not coming back. (In our mind, she is always smart in working less and making excuses.) "
and ask for supporting for her father sickness because you want to treat her fairly.
If this is true, it is better to pay her until she come back from home and have her pay for her own air ticket, NO SALARY IN ADVANCE, and have a resignation letter signed for you to ensure that you could hire another maid if she do not show up on the designated date.
When my Phil maid has just completed 1 year of the contract, she told me that her dad is dead and need to go back to Phil for at least a week.
I was too shock and so do not know what to tell her. I just comfort her and told her to stay calm. And I was also too busy. So, I haven't talked to her much on the issue then. One week later, I found that she has borrowed from finance company. And when she brought up the topic again about two weeks later, I ask her to give me a doctor's certificate cos I need that for the immigration (of course a white lie). She said she cannot get one (can you beleive that?) So, I then told her I found it very difficult to have her away for two weeks. Before I told her she can quit and leave us for good, she told me she rather not to go home.
I have struggled so much whether to let her go or not before that. Then, I was pretty sure that those were all lies and I was so lucky not to be cheated. She is now still staying with us. And after she has confirmed she would not leave. She stopped to pretend she was very sad.
My friend had a poor experience that her maid (Phil) told my friend her husband died of traffic accident. My friend let her back and borrowed some money to her. Finally my friend could not contact her any more !
Afterward, I read my current agency's handbook, I know that it always occur in Phil maid. They are good artist. My agency's suggestion is that don't promise them anything, contact them and then they will contact agency in Phil to confirm if it is a lie or not. I agree with sweetma that asking her to give you a certificate.
Last month my maid also said that her father suffered from a serious illness suddenly, and ask me to pay her salrary (3 weeks eariler) in advance. I reject her and remind her not to borrow money from any finance company.
