Baby not paying attention

My boy is 21 months old...
We noticed that he does not react to our calling. When we called him, 90% of the time he will just continue with what he is doing and ignore us.
We sent him to playgroup couple months ago so that he can have more chances to interact with other childs, but still very often he play on his own.
We are very worried.... anyone with similar experience to share? Thanks all.

Hi, I am a speech therapist.

Not responding to name calling is not very typical for 21 months old child. How about his other behaviors? Can he keep good eye contact with people? Does he enjoy playing with other kids? Does he pay attention to what others do? Can he play toys in a "normal" way? How is his speech development?

If you are in doubt, better bring him to the mother-child health centres for screening. They will refer you to child assessment centres if they worry about the child's development. Please take action. It is always better to know whether there is a problem.

Very often he does not keep good eye contact when we speak to him. He does not enjoy very much playing with others. He play toys I would say normally.

He learnt few words, he says pa pa,ma ma, car, duck but other words in his own tone. I.e.,
Water = Ku Ka
Tiger = Ah Da

He likes music and dance, he can do actions when playing his favorite songs.

Still worried... thinking about taking him for an assessment.

I'll suggest you bring him for an assessment as early as you can. If they find that the child is normal , then it is at least a great relief for you. If not, starting training early is always a good idea. As you may know, there are very long waiting lists for abt services provided by the government. So, take action now!
