Urgent: If yan suddenly said "Mom, I want to resign...." what should I do?
Dear all,
It's me again … This time the problem is not my maid, it’s my friend’s maid … and would like to seek your advices…
Her maid is a yan yan… it is her first contract in HK (hasn’t completed!!!)
Last Friday she suddenly told my friend that she wanted to terminate the contract immediately coz she has found a new employer in Canada. She then gave her a letter stating coz she has personal reasons and then wanted to leave her home.
My friend told her that she needed either to pay her back one month salary or gave her a notice one month in advance and couldn’t say to leave and then went away.
These days are the most busiest days for my friend coz new year will come two weeks later, lots of things to do… plus that maid is lazy so far… so lots of household works…
My friend told her that even she left now, only 14 days she can stay in hk and then she must back to Indo afterwards, she can’t leave her home and stay till her Canada VISA issued.
My friend said her maid doesn’t like her coz she complains her abt her laziness… and therefore she chose this day to terminate is to let my friend does all the things… and just leave her home and stay in HK till the Canada VISA issued.
When she realized the case is not as so ‘good’ as she think, her attitude suddenly changed 180 degree from very inch at first but suddenly become very down and upset… and she changed another letter to my friend saying that she wanted to term the contract with 1 month notice…
Then trouble comes… my friend has locked her master bedroom door… coz afraid of she steal her things…
But what else should she do ??? coz very very scare of she will borrow money… + make her trouble?

thks alot.
My friend doesn't want her to stay in her home... but the problem now is...
Maid wants to leave but she doesn't want to give $$ ... during this month (coz serving notice) ... very frighten of what she will do in her home... and she has found some 'hint' of she potentially steals her things,,, therefore she locks her master bedroom door during daytime...
She said her maid said to her that her relatives have all been Canada to work wor! (Yes, her english is good coz my friend is a Chinese-canadian)

Your friend should be glad that the maid has already told her, so that she (your friend) can take some actions before the maid does any undesirable tricks.
Yes. I know some yans have gone to work in Canada coz apart from Canadians some hongkong immigrants prefer to use yans. (But it's NOT inmportant--------------the point is the maid NO LONGER wants to work with your friend)
I think it's fair: to pay $3270 to end the fear (to avoid having nightmares during a long long night), OR to live with the fear in order to save money. Many employers would rather take the former choice.
(A moderate nightmare may be: the maid does not work up to standard and your friend will be unhappy but cannot use this as a sufficient reason to fire her.
A worst nightmare may be: the maid makes up some "faults" on the employer so that she can leave immediately without paying $$. Don't forget maids have a lot of counsellors (their friends and relatives and even some agents/unions) for them)------REAL CASE: my friend's yan maid didn't want to work with her anymore (but won't let my friend know). She then "slipped" away one Sunday night after taking the holiday, and then went to an yan workers association, claiming that my friend had hurt her with a hot iron (The maid herself put an hot iron on her own forearm to make a marking on it).........
For the Chinese NY clean up / house work, local domestic helpers may be an alternatives.
