Hi telly_ipock,

My son is 20 months old. So far, I having been teaching him chinese only. I am also concern about his chinese in the long run.

From what I have observed from friends around who have older kids. End up 99% of them did not speak chinese at all eventually. Although they can still understand. Also most of them cannot read chinese too.

I also read a documentary earlier which talks about 2nd generation chinese learning Chinese Language. The conclusion is that, most of them have no motivation to learn that at all and many of them even strongly refuse to learn it. Since they don't have the environment to learn it and they don't find it useful and interesting too.

The only way I can thought of is to put them to school which have "Chinese Language" as one of their regular curriculum. Since just Saturday or after school Chinese school is useless. Or bring them to HK to study for a few years....

Thanks for your reply. Wow 99% don't speak well? Are you serious? That strikes me. I do hope Glenwood will be able to speak Cantonese fluently. And I may want him to learn mandarin later too because it's even getting popular in western countries. Hong Kong kids are 兩文三語 ga. And with the falling economy around here and the fast development in China, you never know if it would be better in the future for them to go back to Asia (although I don't know how the air quality there will improve). I know mandarin quite well actually but right now I don't want him to be confused so I'm not speaking mandarin to him at all. When Glen watches English and Cantonese cartoon movies he can sit for quite long, but when I try mandarin movies he is not that interested so I know he doesn't understand them.

The place we live don't have any Chinese community or schools with Chinese curriculum at all. Maybe as you said, we should go back to HK and live for a while.

My daughter is almost 5. I have been speaking Cantonese to her at home and so far her Cantonese is fluent, though she speaks English at school. She is very interested in learning Mandarin so we named one day in a week "Mandarin Day" so that I speak mainly Mandarin to her. I think it really depends on the kid and how persisence the parents are. I speak to her in Cantonese even when she speaks English to me.

I've thought about the "Mandarin day" idea too, and would try it out when he gets older. I know his Daddy would appreciate it too since he really wants to learn Mandarin. But I'm not a very good teacher, but I guess once you are a mother, you have to learn to be a good teacher, haha.

So are you the only one that speaks Chinese to you daughter? That's what I worry most, since I'm the only one that speaks Chinese around here, and I'm worried that's not enough exposure. Thank you.

I am also the only one speaking Chinese to my daughter as my husband doesn't speak Chinese. Also, my daughter has been attending school for 3 years arleady (half day) and now she reads very well in English and she also expresses her interest in learning Chinese and other languages such as Spanish.

Well, may be another advantage I have is that I basically stay home (also "work" from home) and therefore, I spend a lot of time with my daughter......

One thing I noticed though. My daughter starts speaking to her cousin in English this year. They used to communicated mostly in Chinese......

But, you son is still young. Don't worry so much. And, you are right, once you are a mom, you become very creative and will eventually become an expert for your child, if this is what you care most.

If you speak to them in Chinese, they'll definitely pick up some of it. Chinese classes also help too.
I'm a CBC, 25 years old, and mostly my mom helped me with it, and we only speak Cantonese at home. With work I got my reading skills to be at a half decent level, Chinese is definitely a challenging language. I can write simple stuff, but that's something I could probably be better at.

Thanks to all of you very much. Hey, my parents are coming in a couple weeks for a visit. They will stay for two months. They don't speak English. Hope that will help Glenwood pick up more Chinese words. They are bringing lots of Chinese learning materials for him too. I'm excited!

One more observation, I think it's because there are not many Asians living around here, whenever my son sees an Asian looking lady, he always runs to them, all excited. Sometimes he calls them "Mama" too. Did you kids used to do that?
