Me too. I went to Nepal more than ten years ago. Living standard there is low. We had marvellous time in Chiwan. We went for a walk in the park with a local guide and met a rhino. All three of us including the guide had to climb onto the tree and waited for the rhino to go away!!! We also went for rafting for two days. Since that was winter time, the water was not that rough. We were able to enjoy the scenery and peaceful time there. Pokarra has very beautiful scenery too.
I went there about may be 7-8 yrs ago. It is marvellous why you mums can remember so much.
I went to Kathmando in Sept, and still rememeber there is a hotel called Yat and Yati, very high class hotel. If you don't have time to go out of Kathmando, then I remember there is a few places in suburb of Kathmando where you can stay in hotels there and see the view of Everest.
I then go to chiwan, and track there on the top of elephant.
I've been to Pokhara, and went to Annapura for hiking (about 3000+ ft). The scenery is extremely beautiful. The route my sherperd chose is not very difficult. And they will help you carry your things. (If you go there in winter, you cannot track.)
I travelled from Pokhara back to Kathmandu by bus/coach. I remember the road is very dangerous. As we reach the stop in kathmandu, everyone shake hand with the driver, to praise for his good technique.
I have made some Taiwan friends, one of them is still in contact. She has a Taiwan friend, who traveled to Nepal, get to know a local boy, and married with him.
Nepal at that time is quite a safte place and have a lot of foreigners. However, I stayed there by myself for a few days. Local men like to approach women tourists. You have to be very alert.
It is good that I have travelled to some underdeveloped countries, like India and Nepal before my child born and before their political situation turn worse. Now I don't have the chance to do that.
BUT BEWARE OF THE POLITICAL SITUATION NOW. FOLLOW A TOUR IS SAFER NOW.One friend of mine joining a tour to Norther India (Cashimere) in April. If there is tour, I believe the political situation should be OK.
